Basically if you have 2 cars, have one EV for the 99% of trips that aren't >80 miles, and keep your most efficient old car

 

If you have 1, and 99% of your trips are <40 miles but some are 500 miles, find the right sized PHEV so you only use petrol on the long journeys

One set of batteries after 10-20 years of being in a car vs the 50 tonnes of co2 (that's kind of a lot as it's a gas, 28000 m^3, 27 houses full of co2) a normal car creates while driving 200k. You can smelt the metal to recycle it, if you want to extract the lithium it's a bit more expensive, problem is only cost, not fundamental tech.

 

Li-ion batteries will fall to $100/kwh, so a Tesla 85kWh battery is $8500, and weighs 540kg and costs about $1.50 per kg to recycle, so $810, they're not specifically toxic

 

About 17 tonnes of co2 to make a Ford Mondeo

 

You can get a Volt, Vauxhall Ampera in uk, with 30 miles of electric range and 380 miles petrol range for £8-9k

It always surprises me that there are always deals to be done - but you do have to be prepared to walk away and lose that deal and wait for another.

 

Don't go back every day...leave it a week or so...then tell them you have been looking around...but the price is a bit steep or whatever.

 

...but yes, you may lose it.

 

And you need a battery of excuses ready ...I can only afford up to....(to which they will then want you to take finance agreement with them...so you'll want another excuse to get out of that...) ...Or my wife will only allow me to spend up to....

 

And it always helps if you don't give them the impression that you really like potential purchase...but...perhaps at a lower price you would be prepared to over look the colour ..or the wear..or whatever....

 

In the case of VW make it clear to them that you are looking at SEAT - or SKODA options (both of which have identical engines and geartrains to the VW...and often more included features...but no; they don't have the VW badge).

 

And failing a better price - see if you can get them to agree for a free service (at the end of the year...) ...and definitely a very full tank of petrol....new carpet mats....or whatever. There is a always a danger when dealing with thousands of pounds that a few tens of pounds one way or the other don't matter. You wouldn't throw tenners away from your wallet....so keep haggling to the last fiver.

 

I find much the same approach works with IT suppliers. New touch screens for example - we have a had several hundred pounds taken off their apparently "best deal".

Well - I bought a "new" used car on Wednesday (Hyundai i30, since you ask) - didn't manage a discount, but a got the free warranty, 1 year roadside assistance, full service, MOT, full tank and a not bad part ex value on my truly ancient Toyota (and boy will I miss it - I love it - but finance dictates that I must say goodbye to its 16 mpg 3 litre engine and say hello to 60+ mpg diesel )

 

Oh - and when being arm wrestled about the finance deal, I said I was a muslim and I was not allowed credit - that shut him up - though it did mean I couldn't pay with my credit card and get the cash back vouchers

I had a test drive in a grey 67 plate Seat Leon yesterday, 1.4 TSI Xcellence Technology Spec. 2000 miles on the clock.

 

Screen price was £16,695, they offered me £5,000 for my Honda, which I think was a fair price so cost to change was looking like £11,695 and I managed to get this down to £10,500.

 

All things being well I pick the new car up on Thursday.

 

I think it helped being the last day of the month and quarter yesterday!

I bought a 66 plate used Civic diesel (registered 31st Dec) this time last year. 2k on the clock, 0 road fund tax, 5 years service and roadside assist included. Was cheaper in Leicester than home, so that's where I went. Getting 68-70mpg. Really happy.

lol yeah, i've decided to just keep hold of it. it's way too cheap to run an maintain.

 

Never had an issue with it until the dieselgate fix, but got that sorted by a 3rd party to "reverse" the fix after i lost faith in VWs ability to fix and diagnose the issues. Or even admit the issue were caused by the fix.

 

I wouldn't mind but i didn't even want the 1.6tdi, but VW convinced me to get it over the GTD/GTi after explaining how "green" it is to the environment and how it cost £30 a year to tax. They even gave me £5k for a £500 n reg honda accord via the gov scrappage scheme instead of the £2k, and explaind how much i'd save on tax,insure and running costs...... I fell for the sales pitch i guess lol

 

Apparently they had incentives to "convert" drivers to greener cars (oh the irony)

 

First thing the Mrs said......"I thought you were more of a GTi type of guy"...... she looked disappointed! lol
