Hi all,

Google File Stream...

Anybody using this ? Pros and cons?

 

How does the syncing fair with older laptops ? Eg 4gb ram i3?

 

Is sync quick if not using offline files?

Hi, we are using it in all our schools and it's been fantastic. Staff find it really easy to use and speed is fantastic.

We're offering it to all staff and a lot have taken it up. Surprising lot are setting up their own team drives and running with it now. Sync has been fine in school but had one issue with a member of staff whose home internet is naff so their files hadn't synced when they turned the computer off. Turned it on and left it a few minutes and it work.

 

We pitched it as "Google File Stream, the pen drive you never have to unplug" 🤣

we looked at using it - however it is view only for Team drives. As we are trying to encourage team drives in school we felt this could be a backwards step and misleading. it doesnt tell you when you change a file in a team drive that its not going to upload the changes (as far as I could tell at least)

@b0ssman That's not the behavior i see, if i create a file on a desktop pc or makes changes it reflects back instantly..

Interesting - I need to try it again - last time I tried it they didnt work - then I read the "known issues" here - https://support.google.com/a/answer/7491144?hl=en

 

however it now looks like they may have resolved this....I'll be testing again very soon!!

The only issue we have had is that the drive sometimes vanishes from the drive list. Just a double click on the File Stream app then its back.

Just built it into the base image this year. Adoption is slow, but we're getting there.

 

 

The more I can shove into GSuite the easier it will be for me to drop an axe onto our Exchange server.

We have also noticed this. I think the app updating itself is causing this. I considered setting it to automatically launch at login to get around this. However it will bring up a login box for people who don't use it.

everytime google update it it breaks the auto launch - i get a never ending stream of calls from one person because of this

Our ISP is blocking it at the moment.

no ports at all it just requires the registry changes to ignore certificates or no https inspection on the URL'd it hits i have no ports open here

This may need splitting to another thread but for those of you purely cloud or are in the process of moving, who are you using to backup your data once it's up there?

We use the built in G Suite Backup. Vault is also useful.

@FN-GM the built in backup? I've looked at Vault it can do somethings I wouldn't say its a backup solution..

Those that use it, how do you deal with Offline files being stored on Staff PCs at home? I'm assuming this isn't encrypted on the PC so in theory a lost/stolen or compromised PC we'd have a data breach.

Putting the ol GDPR hat on and wondering how best to configure. Disable Offline files ability?

disabled make available offline files here - a few people whined but the management made the call

When the quote comes back say its more then you were expecting and see if they offer a cheaper quote, they did for us.
