Sony using open source emulator for PlayStation Classic plug-and-play

 

I assume it won't be long before it's cracked and people are uploading their own ROMs to replace the subpar collection provided officially.

I guess this is a product aimed squarely at the Gadget Shop market. Pick one up along with a novelty Chewbacca mug and T-shirt with some sort of beer cartoon on it.

i wonder if its possible to just plug in a usb rom drive and play and game you have the disk for. if its an open source emulator id imagine the board inside is also pretty standard so its not impossible it has usb ports (or at least headers) that can be easily used

Not that I'd be encouraging it, because that would be illegal, but I'd expect almost definitely. If the emulator is open-source, it shouldn't take long for the community to figure out how to disable or override the internal storage and attach your own. And then just like 'chipping' your old PS1 back in the day, guides shall appear online on how to do it. I doubt you'd need much more than a soldering iron, some cable and an SD card reader.

 

Once that happens (if it hasn't already), we'll see sales figures shoot up, I'm certain.

would it? If im using a real rom disc ive had since the ps1 game in a usb rom drive on a playstation approved device im not sure "adding" usb ports would count as illegal as iirc its not illegal to modify a device (it is to modify it to break copyright protection but by using real disks im not. now granted if i added a usb port and plugged in a 1tb drive full of every ps1 title known to man thats a different kettle of fish but again if i own the disc isnt that allowed?

Well, it can't be done physically, so it would be a software block, and judging by the effort they've put into the rest of the software, they've probably forgot

I had a modded PSX back in the day, I had Jap versions of Metal Gear Solid and Tekken 3! I had them a YEAR before the official slower versions came to the UK.. I'm assuming the console will be a 60Hz version? (I wonder if the Tekken3 still has the hi-res easter egg mode available)

Something's up with the Sony PlayStation Classic - what should be a celebration of a truly iconic console is compromised by an uneven selection of games, sub-par emulation and the bizarre choice of using a mixture of both NTSC and PAL games in a machine with a locked 60Hz high definition output.

Supposedly you can access the emulator settings by plugging in a USB keyboard and pressing ESC.

After taking in account shipping and import fees, the US PlayStation Classic only ends up being a few £s cheaper compared to buying it from Amazon UK and it would take around two weeks to be delivered with the cheapest shipping option.

Considering I can put my (retained) library of PS1 games straight into my PS3 (so HDMI output, wireless controller, save game emulation etc), even the gadget-hoard part of me isn't interested in one of these really.

IMHO, TOCA wasn't all that good, unless you were playing tanks. CMR was a mighty, mighty game!! The best rally game up until RBR, which showed up just how crummy Codemasters' driving models were (they always had a weird, floaty feel).

Yeah, but I never really cared about rally driving, just couldn't get in to it. Always preferred street racing, the likes of Need for Speed, Burnout, etc.

So when it was TOCA, it was all tanks, all the time

RBR wasn't that PS2 , I'd gotten into V-Rally 2 by then, remember staying up one xmas night with a friend and completing from start to finish taking turns and getting the 405 T16 rally car as a prize.

 

I'm actually waiting on a BBC Micro model B to come out in this format, now that I would queue out of the shop for, it was the computers we had in my secondary school back in 1980's.

RBR was on the PC, PS2 and Xbox. IIRC the Xbox port was dreadful. It was the PC version that I played.

 

V-Rally 1&2 were a lot of fun, especially the way the cars could tumble over and over when you crashed. V-Rally 1 was our first PlayStation game and the look of it blew our minds.
