Emergency contact phone for small children

I was wondering if the great minds of Edugeek might be able to help....

 

My wife suffers from epilepsy and just recently my 4 year old son discovered her fallen in the kitchen unconscious.

 

Thankfully I was just round the corner but you can imagine the trauma that all this caused.

 

I am trying to find a sollution for my children to contact me if there is an emergency and Im not around.

 

I'm not keen on mobile phones as 1) the child wont understand the unlocking mechanism, and 2) the mobile phone may not be in the same place every time.

 

I wondered if there exists a home phone that can always be located in the same place where my son can go and just press one button and it calls me.

It has to be simple to use.

 

Any ideas?

We used to have something like this for my father in law, who suffers with dementia

The one that we had for him was a Doro one and it had an SOS button on it that you could pre-program with a couple of emergency contact numbers. If he pressed the SOS button, it would call the emergency contacts in order until it was answered. In his case, we had it programmed to call my wife's mobile first, then mine, then our home number, and if none of those answered to call emergency services. They are really good and really easy to use as they are specifically for elderly and vulnerable and are designed to be as simple as possible, so no need to have a screen lock on or anything, just press SOS and the call is made.

 

It was an absolute godsend for us, as he was always really independent and would get really agitated if you tried to stop him going out. Having the peace of mind that he had a way of contacting us that didn't involve anything more than pressing a single button was perfect and it helped out on a number of occasions when he had wandered off and got himself a little lost. We could keep him on the phone and ask him questions about what was around him etc, in order to locate him and pick him up.

 

Alternatively, if you would prefer a landline, what about just swapping your existing landline handset out for a big-button model and progamming one of the numbers to dial your mobile. If you tell him that if he picks the phone up and presses 1, it will call daddy, it would give you some peace of mind. If it's going in the same place as the existing landline, it will be familiar to him and you could even test it with him whilst you are in the house, asking him to call daddy and see how he goes. All modern telephone handsets have speed dial on them, so it's just a case of picking a button and programming it with the correct number.

Buttons are big but pictures for speed dial would work?

 

Im sure you could find something similar with smaller buttons.

 

You could put you and your wife as speed dial pictures.

teach him how to use the house phone i am do that now with my godson and how to go next door if there is any problam and if he gets lost he know what do do and he is 4 now

Assuming you don’t have a landline, does your wife have an iPhone? We taught our four year old how to use the emergency contact facility.

Get a landline, numbers in the memories with say pictures and teach him how to use it. No need to charge it up, worry about loosing it, landline will work even when power is out. I was taught to use the landline at an early age and with something so critical as this you need something reliable and easy to use. You can even get phone you can programme and just pick the handset up and it will dial from Interquartz. Landlines are important phones, maybe even look at something like a care link type system so if your wife takes ill and she's on her own she can press a button.

Personally, I’d get a landline and one of those pensioner-style emergency buttons. All it requires is one press and the call centre is alerted. They’ll call the emergency services and call you too. If they can’t get you they’ll contact another nominated person such as a neighbour

 

Your son should be taught how to contact 999 and what to do in an emergency as well. My kids were taught at a very young age, and also about going to a neighbour, as was I.

Many thanks everyone.

In the end we got a landline put in with a big button phone that we have labelled with a picture of me on the quick access button.

My son then just needs to press it and it calls me directly. The phone is also always in the same place so easy to find.

you can get Bluetooth wearables that can automatically ring contacts (via an app) if a seizure is detected. We have a pupil here that uses one.
