The original joke was set at the yanks whocan generally be described as faily thick. A few (20) years ago I was on holiday in the US and was complimented on my good English from a young lady fron New Hampshire. When I pointed out out that I was English. that is why I speak English. She then replied "I thought you guys speak French!". I pointed out that French was spoken in France and English in England.
