Hi all,

Throw away account, would have posted in advice but unable to due to 5 post restriction.

I've decided that it's time to move on job wise, I've sent off a few applications and have a couple of interviews lined up. One thought had crossed my mind is that if I'm unsuccessful in the next few weeks and I happen to have an interview in the summer holidays, where do I stand handing in my notice? HR is in for the first week and then that is it. I'm not bound to specific dates like teachers and our term time only staff. I just don't want to get in to a pickle saying to a potential new employer my notice period is 4 weeks if HR / HT aren't around to pick it up?

I may be wrong but I would have thought that as long as you put your resignation in writing the date of the letter is when your notice period starts irrespective of whether anyone actually reads it as this isn't your fault so why should you be punished. I would also email HR and advise them of your resignation letter, surely someone must cover the email address during summer.

Unless you're looking to intentionally leave your current organisation in a pickle, you should probably call your boss and let them know if you accept a new job offer.

As said i would do the letter and put a copy on line manager/business manager/heads desk or all 3! and also email them to say what you have done that and maybe attach a copy of the letter. You could put read receipts on the email as well so you can see if someone has read it. I personally have the mobile number for all of SLT so i would call the head to inform him as well. Failing all of that you could let the chair of govs know.

I believe there was a similar topic regarding this last year as well!

Remember that the long and short of it is that your notice starts the date you give it (the date on the letter / email) not the data the they notice your notice ;-)

If you want to be helpful then you contact SLT / Head etc. to inform them directly.

Whereever you hand in your notice to, Email HR, DHT, HT and Line manager if that is someone different to inform them where your notice is.

As others have said, if you hand it in its not your fault when they read it.

You could be upfront and say you are looking then they will know to expect it.

This happened to me when I was working in business. I ended up roaming a tower block looking for someone who could formally accept my letter of notice. It was the regional head of computing whose PA was also holiday!

Having done that, I put copies on the desks of my team leader and manager and put one in the in tray in HR (this was in mainframe days - no email!)

Now, I would email all relevant senior people (HR, line manager, school head) with a copy of the letter saying that paper copies are on their desk.

I don't want to cause any issues here but at the same time I don't want to advertise the fact that I am wanting to move on. I have the DHT's mobile number so I would drop them a text just to make them aware if and when I am successful.

Also send a copy to your local MP, and the local newspaper, and post it on the school social media accounts.

I wouldn't even contemplate handing in any notice, unless you have another job lined up.

A good employer will wait for the right candidate and be understanding.
