gpjt Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 Morning! I need to make a firewall change to allow our telephony company access to the system and asked our managed service to do it, but they want to charge money for this. I know abit on how to do things, but don't know enough to confidently know where i'm making the change. I have the details our ip, their ip and the port. Can anyone point me in the direction of how I can do the change please? Thanks in anticipation.
Steve21 Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 What firewall is it? Going to be totally different depending Steve
gpjt Posted June 14, 2018 Author Posted June 14, 2018 Not totally sure to be honest is there a way of checking?
Norphy Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 I hate to be negative but I'd say to just pay the money that the managed service provider want. If you don't even know what firewall they're using, the risk of you doing something to break it is too high.
Steve21 Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 Well if you don't know what firewall it is, I'm guessing you don't have login details for it either? (Under the assumption most will have huge banners when logged in telling you what it is ) If so bit stuck really. Steve

Hence why we have a managed service, but we pay ALOT for this service and an extra charge for a simple change is grating on me!!
Davit2005 Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 Is this a permanent change for the telephone Service (i.e. SIP ports) or is it jus so they can make changes? A temp solution like a screen share would allow them to make changes to the system. As others have said unless you know the firewall and are comfortable in the Interface then I would not go touching things.

I can see lots of inbound rules on our windows firewall am i right in thinking that the managed service most likely provide the firewall?

It's access to the internal ip that the telephone system sits on so they can make changes remotely. Otherwise again they'll charge to do a site visit.
gpjt Posted June 14, 2018 Author Posted June 14, 2018 Turns out our firewall is with a third party company providers of our broadband, so now I understand that their is a cost!!
AlanD Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 ... If you are paying for a managed service... I'm wondering what that "management" covers... Because its sounds to me as if it doesn't include any management.... And I would want a service I was paying for to include management of ports and services... But I can also see that if its part of a managed Internet connection there might be some limits on the number of changes... And if its managed.. I wouldn't expect them to allow you to make changes yourself... Because you could mess those up.. And then expect them to fix it.... You can't have it all ways..
Davit2005 Posted June 22, 2018 Posted June 22, 2018 (edited) It's access to the internal ip that the telephone system sits on so they can make changes remotely. Otherwise again they'll charge to do a site visit. Any reputable company would have access to a screen share, join me , LogMeIn Rescue etc. facility. Explain the situation, they shouldn't need to make a site visit for something they can make a quick change via a screen share. I have also had experience where a managed service provider has tried to charge us for the access credentials when a service contract ended and the equipment was legally ours, needless to say we did not have to pay in the end once we argued this out. yac2016 Posted June 22, 2018 Posted June 22, 2018 If this is Entrust within Staffordshire, they can't charge you for firewall changes as we have done loads of schools and they did not charge(original sales pitch was no more charges for firewall or port changes). They won't do it correctly though and then try to charge for you to check if they have opened the correct ports etc. They also said their broadband is not capable of using any VOIP system apart from their own Capita one. Most schools have either added another line for voip or terminated the current connection due to poor service.
yac2016 Posted June 22, 2018 Posted June 22, 2018 Turns out our firewall is with a third party company providers of our broadband, so now I understand that their is a cost!! This a load of tosh the third party is Updata(Capita), so not really a third party. Easy one for them to peddle it's not our charge blah blah, heard it before with SAP charges, its SCC etc. Again schools we work with were not charged.
Sonic007 Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 Who's it with? We have our Firewall with RM and if we need any ports changing they just do it for us. No charges.
