Why don't you just ask him if he needs anything?

 

He insists at every single Birthday, Father's Day and Christmas that he doesn't want a gift, he doesn't need anything, and not to buy him things. But I still have to turn up with something because my sister always manages to pull something last minute out the bag, and if I turned up with nothing I'd get shown up.

 

Then there all that guilt piled on from my sister 'Dad does a lot for you in your house', 'you're so selfish' etc etc. My family is pretty toxic tbh. I always thought it was normal until I met my in-laws - they are so laid back and chill about everything it's ridiculous. They aren't as materialistic as my family. It's really weird for me at Christmas - LeHusband spends a fortune on me, so I feel obligated to spend more than I can afford on him, even though he insists that I don't need to. But I'm so conditioned to the materialism and gift-shaming that happens in my family that it's a nightmare for me.

If we are being honest about gift giving: I am terrible at selecting a present, have got it SO wrong on many occasions in the past. What is more I am not interested in receiving presents.

 

The reason for starting the thread was to try to collect ideas in one place and look here every now and then when I need inspiration in the hope of avoiding the sort of disasters I have created in the past.

Getting it back on track, have you seen some of the build-your-own wooden models? These look great although they can be pricey.

Ecologist daughter lives in a flat with a balcony and wanted a bird feeder.

 

After quite a bit of hunting, I found this combo for her birthday. It’s been really successful so I thought others might be interested for a nature lover that doesn’t have a garden.

Stumped for presents this year. I normally do pretty well just by listening to everyone over the year but as the children have all left home now and mrwITch doesnt really speak much, I am bereft of ideas :)

 

Trying to think of an experience for mrwITch. Bought him a flight in a microlight for his birthday which he loved, but when asked if he wanted an actual lesson in one - having said he was keen to learn - his answer was "not really bothered" which is his go-to answer for EVERYTHING!!!

 

30yr old son is doing up a VW T5 but wants to get bits himself - and I like to give presents rather than money at Christmas

28yr old son has the same amount of disposable income as we do and so can buy anything he wants really. Trying to think of an experience that he would enjoy

26yr old daughter has just bought a house with her partner. Wanted to pamper her a bit as they are working very hard in the house. But she isnt really very girly so that isnt going to work well

 

TBF I am not any easier to buy for. Although any sort of experience would go down well, except driving a tank (claustrophobia)

This year, I am hoping Santa will bring me Eric Idle's Sorta-biography, a shoulder harness for my binoculars (as my back and neck really aren't coping with a neck-strap any more) and an insect hotel for the garden.

 

Sometimes something cheaper but overlooked is best.

 

Both my Mum and my in-laws are getting hampers put together by me. I bought the cardboard hamper trays and shredded paper from eBay and will be raiding Waitrose, M&S, etc for the contents.

 

I'm getting my Mum a DNA test for her (December) birthday... [emoji23] She is interested in getting one done for family history reasons and, as she isn't confident online, I am organising it.

Interesting idea about the experience package for middle son. As for what he is into - err - he does climbing - and goes out a lot!

Practical and pampering sounds good for daughter. I'll speak to her partner to see if she has mentioned anything to him.

Eldest son doesnt wear VW clothing anymore - he used to - but at 30 I think he thinks he has grown out of all that. I was going to buy a transfer for the van - I've seen ones that look like peeled back metal or whatever but when I mentioned it, he sneered a bit :(

 

As for mrwITch - hmm - anyone know of any good science type books out this year?

Only vaguely sciency book I've read recently is How To Build A Car by Adrian Newey.

He's already got all that. He runs a local facebook group - DASVAG (dorset and south Volkswagen Audi Group)

One of last years successes:- I bought MrsC a heart pendant from Shapeways. They are a 3D printing outlet. Before you all go "Ahhh...", bear in mind MrsC was a nurse, so knows what hearts look like. They have oodles of weird stuff available to order, and will print your designs too.
