Is there anyone on here that knows about amplifiers?

 

I think we have blown the outputs - how? we don't know.

 

Basically we can see the amp is receiving the input as the lights on the amp are dancing up and down on the main volume however there is no output to the speakers. The amp is a Phonics PH1062. I guess these amps should just send the output to the speakers without any issues.

I'm sure you have checked that the switches set correctly - Aux, CD etc and that there isnt a mute somewhere

Can you try a different speaker?

We've tried different speakers. This amp is a 12 channel mixer amp. We were trying to have multiple channels working at the same time but we think something may have popped with the internal outputs.

 

Is there a "monitor" button? These mute the speakers but allow pass through (e.g. recording from one source to another without having to listen to it all).

I see there's a switch at the bottom right which changes the mode of the amp from Stereo LR to Mains / Monitor. Is this switch set correctly or in some mid position?

 

Otherwise there should be a fuse on the circuit board which has probably popped - worth a look as they're easy to change.

We've checked the switch with the speakers in both monitor and mains output - still nothing is outputted.

 

Does it smell of magic smoke? If so, it may be the output FETs have cooked (literally). It's usually uneconomical to repair if so.

 

There is no smell of the magic electrical smoke. I think we might have to take the cover off.

Shame i'm not around in Yorkshire this weekend Tim else I'd have had a look at it for you. @Jon and I have previously used Martin at Audioworks in Bentham, I reckon they'd sort it. It's about 2 hours from you though so you'd want to courier it, might not be economical.

Checking the internal fuses is a good shout and a quick easy thing to do just make sure you don't take a jolt from any caps while you're in there. If you're getting audio but not a lot of it, it sounds like it's not a fuse.

 

Also check the monitor switch from the inside - bypass it to main as a test perhaps.

 

The older version of this is on ebay for about £150 as a last resort, or the new version of it is £240 ex VAT.

Thinking outside of the box, have you tried the monitor channel? If that works, you could mix on the monitor levels and output to another power amp (for less money than a powered mixer) and amplify the monitor output. Also, you didn't mention what you're putting through it; if you're using mics, do they need the phantom power turning on?

We've checked the majority of the amp. If you are next up hear let me know and you can certainly have look.

 

We ended up buying the £169 on ebay for our music dept but it would be great if this broken one could be repaired.

...I'm kind of surprised if the amp has failed...because modern amps usually have good protection even against dead short cables being connected....

 

We have, in the past, managed to kill speakers - by connecting a cassette player (I know...you are all too young to remember such things...) which produced a lot of high power high frequency on rewind....we couldn't hear a thing from the speakers as they got fried.....

 

The trouble with a lot of the stuff these days - in that unless you are buying well branded (often = expensive) kit - they can be unserviceable - because you just can't get replacement chips...Its the same with some TVs...they produce a batch of bespoke chips...use them all to make the devices...but if they break down...there are no spare chips....Very much a throw away approach...

The protection doesn't stop components failing it stops any more happening, it's usually in the form of a self check when powered on. All of my amps and receiver check the speakers aren't wired incorrectly and there are no shorts in the output stage.

Whilst UK stockists like RS and Farnell won't stock exotic parts for televisions or laptops I don't have much problem sourcing from China. There's also ohm supplies in the UK.
