DGardiner Posted March 14, 2018 Posted March 14, 2018 The hardware in it is still decent enough to be of use, just opened our old one up and its all glued together.... Was going to use it as a SBC for 3CX since we have too many handsets for the pi/nuc solution according to our provider - they offered to put in a small pc but id prefer it went in a cabinet and in a rack so here i am!

Someone must have done this?! im downloading Hyper-V Server 2016 to chuck on it now so will find out soon! i hope that monitor connection on the back actually works its a janky io pin header thing... again glued on

We upgraded the ram in our old UTM1000 and it's now used as a backup to our main S8 appliance.

Norphy Posted March 14, 2018 Posted March 14, 2018 I've not done it with a Smoothwall appliance before but the Bloxx appliances we had at my old place were using Intel based chassis. They were just holding down the racks so we installed Windows on them and turned them into terminal servers.

We've got a Watchguard Firewall we're not using any more so I've just taken a look and it's got a VGA port on the back so I've just opened it up and theres a 320GB HDD in it with 4GB of PC3 1333 RAM in it! No idea what the CPU is so when I get a chance I'll remove the HDD and as there are 2 SATA ports I could bung in 2 HDDs and see what OS will install on it. Just need to think of a use for it now...
Mako Posted March 14, 2018 Posted March 14, 2018 Our Smoothwall is supplied by our LA... we got a replacement one a year or so ago, and told to box the old one up for collection. They probably forgot it exists. It's still sat in my storeroom... I'm intrigued now.

FN-GM Posted March 15, 2018 Posted March 15, 2018 I have one in temporary service at the moment. I installed PFsense and it is to bridge a primary school network that we are meeting into ours. Means I can access their system but no machines on the legacy can access ours. 2

You might just need to enabled VT-d in the BIOS? was already on, i was using hyperv server 2016 though and its a core OS, but doesnt require a licence! so troubleshooting was a bit of a pain, the hypervisor just refused to start.. in hindsight i should have just connected event viewer remotely and had a look for the issue but i needed to get the SBC up and running this week. the processor in it was a core2quad Q9400 if i remember right was an old UTM1000 i think
Norphy Posted March 16, 2018 Posted March 16, 2018 Hyper-V 2016 requires a CPU which supports SLAT, among other things. I have a machine with a Q9400 sat next to me and according to systeminfo.exe, it doesn't support SLAT. You could probably get away with Hyper-V 2012 on there though. 1

I am running VMs on our old S4 but needed to enable Intel Virtualisation and Execute Disable Bit in the BIOS. its a UTM1000 i think, someone mentioned earlier in the thread that hyperv2016 had some higher requirements and that it probably would have got away with it on 2012 either way i was only going to use it for a 3cx SBC so its still good for what i wanted! 1

Worked well I originally wanted to install Hyper-V 2012 R2 onto mine, however it wouldn't let me start any VM's. I think the processors were just slightly too old, sadly. Would have preferred Sophos to be virtualised!
