Decent (but not expensive) mice

Does anybody have a good source of mice? Just needs to be a basic 2 button with scroll optical mouse, but in the past we've had a run of bad luck where the mice we've had (mostly with new PCs) just don't work on our desks without a sheet of paper putting underneath them, and others the buttons have just been easily pulled off. I'm looking around the £5 mark to try and get something a bit more likely to last but I don't want to order 25 or 50 of them and discover they don't like our desks!

 

The desks are just standard light wood coloured worktop. Thinking back the best mice we've had have been Dell or Microsoft but hoping not to have to spend that much.

We're mostly Logitech mice here, and I've been buying B100s and B110s for years. These read surfaces well, are cheap, and survive light abuse (though if the buttons are pulled up that'll kill them, like any other). In your budget.

Think I'll give the B100 a go, thinking about it the mice we've had problems with were from one specific PC manufacturer and they were the "included" (£5 I think per set) keyboard and mouse bundle. Keyboards were decent so the mice were probably the 99p variety.

Whatever the cheapest Logitech is that I can find. Good mice last years if not abused.

Ditto, we've exclusively bought logitech mice for ages. Work well and we only have issues when people prise the buttons off!

Thanks all going to get a load of Logitech mice... probably over the summer as we've found a box with 10 old Dell optical mice in which will see us through until then.

My personal favourite is the Microsoft ones, followed by the trust ones (which are also usually the cheapest by quite some way!). The Logitech ones are fine, but have had a fair few where the wheel doesn't quite move as I would normally expect. Nothing major, just a slight annoyance.

Boycotting Trust for now - bought a load of USB headsets and they don't work in USB3 ports, and don't work on any of our laptops ("Device configurator failed" or something like that in Event Viewer). Works fine on my PC (and a few I've tested at random) though....

From a ruggedness perspective the Hill Component mice are excellent ... however we have issues on plain white untextured desks in some but not all locations.

I would much prefer to use them wherever I can and then have some mice that work better on the remaining surfaces to fill in the gaps as the attrition rate on non-Hills mice is atrocious.

I've still got one of the original MS optical mice, the white one with the red light towards you. At the time paid about £20 probably 15+ years ago it even came with a PS2 to USB connector. Still going strong, slightly discoloured but works for me.

Logitech - yes, and Microsoft - here. They seem to last the course while in-badged budget ones are replaced 2 or 3 times. My complain would be that every year they seem to make the cables 10cm shorter - so that the mice never quite reach where you want them on the desk - which means they get tugged. And then the cable breaks (usually inside the mouse). You can fix that easily of course...but then the lead is even shorter. And they seem to use cables which are mostly plastic and each wire has 3 of the finest strands of copper so it doesn't take much for those three strands to break.

 

Keyboards never seem to suffer in the same way...
