Hi Andy,

Thanks for the rapid reply!

It does not appear in the answer part (here is a screenshot: https://gyazo.com/f301714bf97fa39bf7623520d70bf00a). Here is a screenshot of how it looks in EWP (https://gyazo.com/6565c96f209dbb488033fd874efe3cf2).

Thanks for taking time out of your day to help, really appreciate it.

Thanks

Tom

Hi Tom,

The EWP File you have sent to me opens up fine with double click on open existing through EWP. So at this point Iim not sure what is stopping you??

See video Below as evidence that your file works as expected.

I was trying to open it directly from the USB and that is when it was opening blank. After watching your video I copied the file to the desktop and opened it and it worked fine. Thanks for your help.

Thanks

Ok I see, how is the usb mapped on the computer? Just a standard drive letter? Just seems odd that’s all if it is a drive letter.

Especially when you can save to USB but seemingly not open…

We have had something similar, you open a file and it is blank, close it down and it then opens properly (with text) something we've just got used to.

I reckon it might just be my USB stick to be honest. I'll try a different one and see if it works but now I know it works if I put it onto the PC. So thanks for all of your help!

Thanks

Hope everyone is enjoying a little more freedom and the summer holidays, the next version of EWP v4.8 will be released around the week of the 16th august. Nothing major as far as to report on other than update to the components used in EWP. Stability fixes are what developers call them :-)

Will post nearer the time when the release is ready.

Enjoy the remaining summer!

New UPDATE RELEASED!!

· ADDED: CD Player now has a track scrubbing/seek bar so you can move to a specific point within the audio track.

· FIXED: If “MuteSystemAudio” as set to 1, when exiting, EWP would crash when there are no audio devices present or disabled within scenarios over Remote Desktop. This has also allowed me to merge the ‘MuteAudio’ and ‘UnMuteAudio’ functions into one combined function.

· FIXED: If “MuteSystemAudio” as set to 1, when trying to mute the system audio on some occasions, EWP would crash why trying to get the current audio device. The correct error handling has been introduced and an exit sub has been introduced at the first hint of no detectable audio devices.

· UPGRADED: EWP’s document component, TextControl, has been upgraded to x19 Service Pack 3 (contains numerous fixes).

· UPGRADED: EWP is compiled and written with Visual Studio, which has been upgraded to version 16.10.4

· UPGRADED: EWP’s spell check facility, Keyoti RapidSpell, has been upgraded to version 6.2.0 (new dictionary words added).

· UPGRADED: EWP’s audio library, Un4seen BASS, has been upgraded to version 2.4.16.3 (various fixes/improvements).

Excellent.

Hopefully this version will run on my restricted laptops when I get back to work after my holiday as even allowing modify rights to the ProgramData and Windows Temp folder for the test user it failed to run for a non admin (and your site wasn't available for the last few days)

Yes I know, I had forgotten to pay the renewal for the domain name, oops!

It’s normally in my calendar but slipped my mind and doesn’t offer auto renew.

Lesson learned!

Well you said the new version was due out this week so it wasn't a major issue :D

Very true!

If there are any issues then please get them in to me here or via the EWP website and I’ll get them fixed the next day.

Hi

Really appreciate the software and how well it's worked.

Was after some ideas or experience on moving from offline laptops to WiFi connected ones saving to a network share. We're currently using ExamWritePad on 30-40 Win10 laptops, WiFi/Ethernet/Bluetooth disabled, everything locked down except EWP and logging on automatically as a local user account and opening EWP on login. Saving to a USB stick with backup to the laptop hard drive folder, which is only accessible by local admin (been very useful when they manage not to save despite the prompts)

Aiming for the next exams to have the laptops all on the WiFi and domain to apply GPO, save to a network share or domain account individual to each laptop so no more USB sticks. Keep everything else as it is.

So far have managed to get the WiFi secure I think? with NPS and certificates. This allowed setting the GPO restrictions to allow only one network 802.1X so they can't spoof it on a phone or something and not able to join any it doesn't already have.

Next step to VLAN that off and restrict it further so they can only save to a network share or fetch the EWP config centrally.

Domain accounts or computer account saving to the network share , the saves will be swept to another that folder only Exams Officer and some backup staff have access to maybe every 5 minutes? would this affect EWP when it saves again

Would this be within the rules ?, have seen questions about what counts as internet/intranet access but some schools seem to use a network share as a save location.

While the JCQ regulations suggest devices should NOT be connected to the internet/network, I find that they set these refs without asking IT Pros who work in schools about this.

We have ours on the domain and we map their H drive to a network share. The internet is disabled by means of the user account logged in is blocked via the proxy and we use AppLocker to only allow specific Apps to run also, so all internet browsers are blocked.

I think it’s a common sense approach that you need to apply, think of this scenario, if you had you device offline, and your hard drive fails, you won’t be able to recover any work. The only way to negate this is to have local backups and then save to the working EWP file to a network share, this way in the event of a complete computer failure, you can recover on a different PC.

Does examwritepad support dictation?

No sorry, Microsoft Word has that nailed on as almost a perfect feature, I can’t compete, on a free level.

I’d love to have it but would cost ££ for something decent.

Windows 10 has built in dictation, Win+H

It does, yes, but I have never used it so can’t comment on it usability, and quality of results.

Has anyone else tried to run EWP (4.8.0.0) on LTSC?

I've submitted an issue on the EWP site, but I wondered if anyone else had tried it.

Hi,

I saw it yes but I don’t ask for an email address so I have no means of contacting you for further info.

Can you tell me if, when you run EWP, does the window appear at all?

No, nothing is displayed.

I'll send you my email address in case you want to contact me that way.
