OK,

 

I have my ideas on EWP3 and its only right that I ask all you you to offer anything with mentioning in terms of EWP3. I cant promise anything but I'm ready to listen!!

 

My plan is to have the following as priority:

 

Newer Text editing control

Reliable printing

faster/stable spellchecker

Simple interface

Even more options to configure for more flexibility

 

and

Keep all this under 10,000 lines of code which is where EWP2 currently stands!!

Something else I thought, maybe rather than having to enable spell check in configuration, there could be an option on the startup screen and we could secure this by setting a password.

The command line automation stuff doesn't work correctly, when you print it opens up a minised window that you have to close first. If you could this working correctly in the new version, I'm pretty sure our Exams Officer will marry you.

Running off the network is not an issue with EWP programming per say, if it’s an issue then it’s related to the DotNetFramework if there is any. Because we were running over WiFi we decided to script copying EWP to the local PC at logon. This will always be advisable but I certainly will look at it.

It’s done via config for those that need it disabled like ourselves. I can’t see this changing as you either want it in or off so config seems best option.

I know about this yes, I’m looking into this for EWP3 with an exciting new option for batch printing a bunch of files in a specific folder.

I would need more specifics on this. Would it need a basic set on audio controls? Playlist? Audio CD support? Etc..

Control wise, it'd need to be able to pause, stop and switch back and forth between tracks. Being able to scrub through the track would be nice, but not required, perhaps at the least a button to skip forward 5/10 seconds with each press.

 

Being able to load a playlist would be necessary. Don't want students to be able to re-organise or edit the track titles, I'd have no problem creating the playlist outside of the software if it's a simple XML file.

I don't think audio cd support is neccesary, anybody that still does audio exams using CDs is a masochist.

I know it doesn't really solve the problem but you can craft a VLC shortcut to play an entire folder.

Put the shortcut and the folder somewhere they don't have permission to edit and boom.

It's what I'm currently doing.

 

Having an audio player in the ExamWritePad would mean we're not having to use the split screen feature or allow minimise, which would make things easier for students and stop them from trying to use other applications.

Are they allowed to start-stop?

I was under the impression that the exam CD had to be played 'verbatim' (for lack of a better word) because there are pauses in place to denote time given to answering questions?

The only exception being extra time, where the exam boards offer instructions like 'pause for x seconds' once a question has been read out.

In the recent Lanuages and Music exam you have been able to (At least with AQA). Media Studies still has the designated pauses, but that's a video.

I think the audio player will have to be thought about after the framework for EWP3 is done and coding is under way. I far say .NetFramework has good enough basic media controls available to do the job but will investigate further down the line.

 

Interesting thought though a built in media player, but is how far do you go as next time it will be “can you build in a screen reader” etc....

Ass17 - I haven't read this whole thread but is this your own work? do you consider it freeware? shareware? beerware? - can you put something in the zip that covers "licencing" so we can COA on that side if we use it?

I will be adding this into the documentation for version 3 out later this year.

 

But please feel free to download as FREEWARE. ExamWritePad will always be free to download and free to use.

You can set the font to what ever size you like and you can all zoom into the document whilst keeping the font at normal regular size.

 

Yes you can download it from here, if you go back through the last couple of pages, you should find v2.6.8.0

Have you thought about open sourcing it on GitHub or the like, could allow other people to assist with new features/bug fixes, and if you used something like Git/GitHub you'd still be in control of what got pulled back in and merged.

To be honest I have thought about it, and maybe one day I will once I feel in need help or I have taken the project as far as I can.

 

It’s one of those things where you spend so much time invested in something that you don’t want to let go and give others a chance to rip it off.

So I've landed another job. This new job thankfully will have nothing to do with exams, so I likely won't be coming into this thread much anymore.

 

Just wanted to say thank you for all the work you put into this and I think what you're doing is fantastic. I'll be sure to point people in your direction should I come across any other IT techs complaining about exams. Also, expect a lot of posts asking for help from my coworker lol.
