Stokes made darn sure he was at the right end of the wicket as much as possible. Stunning performance. And Leach earned himself free glasses for life 1

Will then be qualified to do multi-day matches - all I need to do then is find a multi-day match to score! Only another two months (plus a couple of weeks) to the start of the season!

Sadly I wasn't able to make the scorers course that Norfolk ran last year. There's an 'Introduction to Scoring' course this weekend but not sure I can make that either. But definitely a major point made in the last course is "Scorers are your friend !", not that I ever doubted it.

To be fair, though, most of the Birmingham League ones nowadays are pretty good, although one or two of them still have - how shall I put it nicely - a rather inflated sense of self-importance? Comments like "I'm not carrying one of those new fangled gadgets just to make your life easier." are mercifully rarer these days when I suggest that one of them carries one of my two-way radios, but there are still a few who prioritise multiple copies of DLS over my tea...

I think umpiring is very similar to being an IT Manager, you work hard to do a complex job that very few people really understand to ensure that things go smoothly for everyone else and they can do what they want to do. I umpire because I like the satisfaction of making everything work smoothly and, if truth be told, I like being in control, but I definitely do not like being the centre of attention. I only carry two - one for the scorebox, and one for one of the umpires to carry - but there aren't many matches when they don't get used at some point. They were one of the first pieces of scoring kit that I invested in, and they've proved invaluable.

Sadly it was rained off, but everyone was just glad to be on the field. We suggested ot the captains that trying to play 40 overs might be problematic given the forecast but they insisted on it. Managed on slightly over 30 in the end, but despite being really heavy it seems the rain was very localised, many other games in Norfolk went the distance. I felt really rusty, th nerves weren't helped by the local ACO secretary AND the development officer popping by to watch how we handled things ! https://swaffham.play-cricket.com/website/results/4467842 1

Quite understand the need to keep everyone safe, and quite right that no club should be penalised for not being able to provide a scorer, but most clubs had already made provision (gazebos etc) for enabling two people to score. Oh, well - hopefully be back to (approaching) normal soon.

One thing that strikes me as odd is they're insisting on the batsmen running in lanes, yet they say there's no danger from the bowler running past the umpire.

I don’t think it’s the running past that they’re worried about - more the possibility of a collision?

I think I need to polish up my knowledge of the laws. Our regular season doesn't start until May though, might be a few teams want umpires for preseason games though. 1

Sadly my father has been quite ill this year and I live 170 miles away and I'm his only viable next of kin, so I've had to cancel my umpiring appointments since I'd rather be available at short notice than cancel at short notice. But I've been offered a game and it's not a problem if I drop out as they have a spare so less pressure.

Had a friendly weekend before last, the first league game last Saturday and a cup game last Sunday, so am back into the swing of things, now. Won two out of three, so not too bad. The one we lost was against Moeen Ali’s club side - fortunately he wasn’t playing (although the rest of the family were), otherwise we’d have lost a lot quicker!

Where do you guys gets yours from? I'd like to stick to Kookaburra if possible as i like their stuff.

I’ve managed to avoid the hundred so far (sorry, but I refuse to dignify it with capital letters!), but I thought I’d watch the final as Birmingham are in it. What a load of rubbish. As if it wasn’t bad enough listening to Michael Vaughan shouting down the mic and trying to pretend that he’s ‘wiv it wiv da kids, bro’ (I may be slightly exaggerating - but only just!) we then have some stupid DJ and the modern day equivalent of Pans People in between innings. What happening to watching the groundsman re-mark the creases, running to the loo and entering into heated debate about whether they’re using the correct type of roller, for goodness sake?!
