Thanks, still plenty of work to do with the bat (Defensive stuff needs a LOT of work) but i was getting out for 0, 1s and 2s at the start of season, towards the end i scored 8, 6 and 8, and all of them had boundries (small steps) and for two of those i think i was still in at the end (been put into bat at 10 or 11 mostly...as you'd expect..) Very pleased with my bowling (although erratic at times), though my last two games weren't my best, i must've done enough prior to that for them to have made their mind up. Definitely going to stay on for the next season.

dcwhitworth Posted October 24, 2018 Posted October 24, 2018 Golden Duck? Nope. Actually I didn't even think he was that quick, I've definitely faced faster bowlers. And before you suggest it he definitely wasn't holding back, he might not have been flat out but not far off I think. . . . . . . OK, OK. So it was 2006 and he was 12. And he did get me out. Actually 12 is young to be playing in the Norfolk League (13 is normal minimum age), I think it was his first season in the league and since it was early June I was probably one of his very first victims in competitive adult cricket.

I was toying with doing a scorers course this winter but didn't get round to it, more for the insight into the job than any serious intent on scoring. I pushed the boat out over the winter and sent my bat to Newbery to be refurbished, despite being 14 years old it came back looking like new. Was so pleased I posted a picture of it on Facebook. My Mum's comment ? "What are you doing buying a new bat at your age ?". Thanks Mum . . . 1

Worth doing next year - they're generally good fun, and give you a different perspective on things (to say nothing of giving you a quick 'fix' of cricket before the season begins!) and, if you've never been, the bi-yearly ACO conference is good fun - next one isn't until 2020, and is being held at Trent Bridge, I believe. Well our season is officially underway with the Norfolk ACO AGM. Oh lordy can they chunter on about minor stuff. Last year, loads of changes to the laws, not much fuss. This year one tweak to Law 41.7 and they're flapping. Also we're moving to a new web-based appointment system. I can see some people freaking out over this. They did a couple of presentation sessions to show the umpires the system and I've rarely seen a worse presentation. A really good example of why you shouldn't let a software developer try and explain his own product to a set of non-IT people. Plus he seemed to have no plan and no preparation.
Tesla Posted April 3, 2019 Author Posted April 3, 2019 Been at indoor nets for last 6 weeks, our team have had a bowling machine kindly donated, and it seems to have made a massive difference to my batting. Having only played last year, batting technique is seriously lacking, so being able to consistently face the same deliveries over and over again rather than a) having opposition obviously trying to get you out. b) your team trying to bowl well at you (and 4 or 5 different bowlers one after the other) seems to have seen a nice improvement when i am facing teammates in the nets. I am feeling a lot more confident with the bat, and i'm getting my front foot forward a lot more. What i was doing before, was trying to take a step back to give myself extra time, which then disrupts your positioning/ timing/ and actually gives you less time, as you dont have the time to step back to take in the delivery, as by the time i do that, the ball is already at my feet. It's just something I am having to tell my brain to not do. Will have to see what the season brings!

To me the most important aspect of batting is to get your eyes in line with the ball, if you're not facing anyone too fast I'd also be heading forwards most of the time. Would love to face a bowling machine. I normally dip out of nets because they bear so little resemblance to the real thing, one session maybe to get the feet moving and things back in sync and that's enough for me.

Drove 40 miles, only to be told that the match was called off last night because of a waterlogged pitch. Gee, guys, thanks for letting the scorer know...

dcwhitworth Posted May 20, 2019 Posted May 20, 2019 Umpired my first game in the Norfolk Alliance on Saturday (top level of cricket with the county), all went pretty well and one or two interesting oddities including the batsman who insisted he didn't want the four runs I'd just signalled. It was overthrows and he said he'd (inadvertently) obstructed the wicketkeeper from fielding it. I hadn't seen this as I was watching the stumps at the other end. Very odd. 1

That's what I did, I've posted the incident to our umpires' forum to get some thoughts on the event. We gave the poor scorers a hard time as there was also an LBW decision from my colleague which he then reversed.
