MatthewL Posted February 13, 2018 Posted February 13, 2018 Please move to another area if it is better suited. Look to scope out a new PC at home, nothing too fancy, just going to buy something prebuilt but any suggestions on best place these days? Looking for i5/i7 or AMD equivalent (out of touch with AMD stuff), SSD 200GB+ possible RAID if its worth it, at least 2 HDMI ports on graphics card with a view to having a 3 monitor setup. Historically I have used Overclockers but prices have all shot up. Just after a low profile type PC if I can, mainly used as an office type PC with a bit of photo editing. Any suggestions, obviously the more silent the better
DalekSec Posted February 13, 2018 Posted February 13, 2018 (edited) Ryzen is outperforming Intel Cores now at all levels (Levels they compete at obviously) for professional workloads, gaming not so much. The 1600x is the sweet spot for money/performance ratio, also try and get a m.2 over an SSD for the boot GFX wise, if you want to game GTX1060 upwards depending on budget, not so worried about gaming -> 1050/1050ti Edited February 13, 2018 by DalekSec
3s-gtech Posted February 13, 2018 Posted February 13, 2018 AMD have just released the Raven Ridge APUs for desktop - so Ryzen with Vega integrated graphics. Could make for a bargain little system - they're great value vs price equivalent Intel parts. Many of the motherboards on this platform allow for triple monitors via the onboard outputs.
ICTDirect_Dave Posted February 13, 2018 Posted February 13, 2018 That little HP 8300 Elite SFF we took to BETT would be ideal here I reckon. i7 3770, 8GB RAM, 120GB SSD, 500GB HDD, GTX 1050ti 4Gb £450 ex vat. Proper little pocket beast
bald_pig Posted February 13, 2018 Posted February 13, 2018 Have a play about on uk.pcpartpicker.com to get the prices from multiple retailers.
MatthewL Posted February 13, 2018 Author Posted February 13, 2018 Some food for thought there. That system looks good value for money Dave, can it be spec'd up for 16Gb, 240GB SSD, loose the 500GB? Also would i be able ot buy this for home? - - - Updated - - - Had a play with the part picker site, end up spending a fortune I don't have.

Drop me a PM and we'll work out some specs
MatthewL Posted February 13, 2018 Author Posted February 13, 2018 Will do, on my list to sort need to have a look and see what is out there.
googlemad Posted February 14, 2018 Posted February 14, 2018 The main problem at the moment is when you get to the part where you need to acquire some DDR4 memory...it ain't cheap at the moment!
MatthewL Posted August 9, 2018 Author Posted August 9, 2018 Looking at this again as I need to replace Current spec is i5 4570 at 3.2Ghz, 8GB Ram, GTX 750Ti, 2 Samsung 24" monitors on a Gigabyte board and a modular PSU. Looking for i5/i7 or it it worth look at AMD now, 16GB Ram, GTX 1060 for graphics probably, monitors looking to get 2 matching ones maybe a 3rd either 24" or 27" (any recommendations) and what brand boards to look for. Also cooling is liquid still the best? I do a lot of photo editing work plus lot of data work during the day so need something with some go in it. - - - Updated - - - Looking at this again as I need to replace Current spec is i5 4570 at 3.2Ghz, 8GB Ram, GTX 750Ti, 2 Samsung 24" monitors on a Gigabyte board and a modular PSU. 3s-gtech Posted August 9, 2018 Posted August 9, 2018 More than worth looking at AMD for the CPU. For your usage they may work out faster versus price equivalent Intel parts (especially when factoring in MB). Don't overspend on a GTX 1060 - a new generation of cards is incoming so only buy one if it's 'cheap'. Cooling wise it's still the same deal - liquid may perform the best but is a hassle. Sealed liquid systems are good but not flexible for adding loops, and air is pretty capable unless you're using monsters like Threadripper or i7-79**. Boad wise, just look at the main brands with the features you want at the best price - so form-factor, PCI-e lanes and slots (including for M.2), audio codec, toughened slots etc.
MatthewL Posted August 9, 2018 Author Posted August 9, 2018 Thanks. Not that much changed since I last built except cost then! AMD what range should I be looking at say equivalent to i5. It's years since I've built a PC but think its going to be cheaper than pre built from the likes of Overclockers. - - - Updated - - - Thanks. 3s-gtech Posted August 9, 2018 Posted August 9, 2018 Ryzen 5 2600x is the rough equivalent to the i5 8600k. The 2500x should be out soon.
MatthewL Posted August 16, 2018 Author Posted August 16, 2018 Just been having a look around, thoughts on this build?
DalekSec Posted August 16, 2018 Posted August 16, 2018 (edited) Just been having a look around, thoughts on this build? Few things, the CPU is an older gen, something like the i7 8770k might be better. Also if you are doing content creation etc Ryzen is better, intel is better for gaming but atm AMD is better for Content creation so be worth looking at their 2nd gen AM4 chips. For the cooler depending if you're overclocking or not, if you are you need a beefier one, if you're not a evo 212 will do and thats half the price. The PSU is overkill, wont need more than a 700W, my PC is a beast i dont draw anywhere close to 850. So can save more money on a cheaper PSU (Corsair make good price/performance) Also with RAM prices atm unless you play to use all 32GB straight away i'd buy 16GB now and 16GB in a few months when the prices come back down. Also you're missing a case Edit: just looked at my PSU i have a 850w, with that i have 2 GTX 1080s that are overclocked, a Ryzen 1800x thats overclocked along with 6 fans and a watercooling loop. Under a stress test it goes to around 600-650W iirc so for your build you won't need anywhere close to a 850w Edited August 16, 2018 by DalekSec
MatthewL Posted August 16, 2018 Author Posted August 16, 2018 Thanks, will have a look. No plan on overclocking. PSU is only 600W, might even salvage this one in my current PC and cases I have spare cases everywhere. What about monitors, any thoughts on them?

Specs seem good for general content creation, aslong as you pay over low end for monitors you should be ok.
HTCPCP Posted August 17, 2018 Posted August 17, 2018 Spec seems fine. Unless they have changed recently, the CM water coolers are bit of a pain to fit. As a result, a silent build or overclock machine are the only 2 times I would water cool, and even then, it would be a custom loop rather than an AIO solution. Have a look at the Noctua coolers, as they are amazing, and still reasonably quiet. Can also make some good savings by moving away from socket 2011, to an i7 8700k, and either an 1151 board, unless you plan on going and putting a massive processor upgrade to one of intel's insane range processors in the future. (Extra money for RGB goodness?)
bald_pig Posted August 17, 2018 Posted August 17, 2018 I've had a little play about, for £100 less this build will give you a higher spec processor, better gpu, faster ram, more storage, and faster storage. https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/CcCWzY
bald_pig Posted August 17, 2018 Posted August 17, 2018 Oh, and this is based around an MATX board instead, so you can get a more compact case.

Steve21 Posted August 17, 2018 Posted August 17, 2018 My gawd that RAM is hideous xD Nah dude the nighthawks can make some epic rainbow pcs! Steve
bald_pig Posted August 17, 2018 Posted August 17, 2018 My gawd that RAM is hideous xD Who cares when it's running faster and costs less!
DJ-1701 Posted August 17, 2018 Posted August 17, 2018 My gawd that RAM is hideous xD I would have thought you of all people would have loved it as it appears to be RGB.
