New PC at Home

Sorry to bump an old topic but looking to replace sooner rather than later so got this setup, what are your thoughts?

 

Think AMD is the route to go, not sure if cooler is the best, motherboard happy with ASUS or Gigabyte used them for years, graphics card think will meet my needs looking to run 2 monitors possible a third. PSU is 400W but its only just looking to use just under 300W. I've got a spare case, was contemplating using the PSU out this machine but think I'd like all new as this one is showing its age.

 

At the 3 times the cost of my last system that I got from Overclockers it's going to last me. My only thoughts were looking to upgrade processing power if it doesn't hike it up.

IMO, swap to second hen Ryzen for the CPU, and the Radeon RX590 is quicker than the 1060 6GB (though uses more power). 400W should be enough, but not masses of headroom.

Will take a look at the graphics, never been big on graphics cards as not a gamer just do a bit of photo and video work so went with what I knew.

 

What PSU would you put in, obviously depends on graphics how much would you over spec it? Currently I think I have an 600W or 800W in for running a rig less than this, do I save £100 and use this, I suppose there is nothing wrong with it, I'm reusing a case and optical drive.

Yeah exactly that - a 2600 would be the natural fit. Graphics wise, you could save a fortune by speccing that down a bit - the GPU usage for gaming is vastly different for photo and video (generally). Worth cross checking the performance of your favourite applications to see if they will benefit. I would always suggest using your old PSU. They're a consumable - use it until it's worn out or doesn't have the required connectors for your rig. I'd bet yours does, so save some cash. Edited November 21, 2018 by 3s-gtech

agreed the 2600 is a better choice than a 1600

Cooling - unless you plan on overclocking, the AMD Wraith Stealth coolers are more than good enough, and unlike their Intel counterparts, are actually worth using if you are running your machine stock.

PSU - 80+ platinum is fine, but for lower end machines, it's a bit overkill. I would look at 550-650w Seasonic 80+Gold certified parts, as that way you are more likely to be operating around the peak efficiency range

Storage - the samsung 850 evo is getting on a bit and for that price, you can get some far bigger capacity other branded ones. You also have an m.2 port, so if you want even more performance in your boot drive - it's well worth looking at

Thanks for the advice, will look at that. I always over spec my machines to last me that bit longer. No plan on overclocking just after a nice little nippy machine that can handle a bit of work from time to time.

 

I've been out of this side of things for a while and things have changed massively since I bought a PC like that and so have prices too! Lots to bare in mind and hopefully can hammer the credit card in the next week or so!

 

Now to just find the perfect monitor setup!

Monitor wise, buy on usage. If you're into photo and video, colour accuracy will be more important than fast response and Gsync/Freesync. Some great deals on whopping great screens at the moment.
