Badaz52 Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 Hi everyone, We are having an annoying issue on Windows 10, this issue is present on 1607 and is still there on 1709 for us. We have tried to add network printers in several ways: 1. Printui.dll login script 2. Group policy preferences 3. CON2PRT login script The outcome is always the same. All three methods work but only sometimes, for example if a student logs in they may get no printers if it is the first time on that PC. Logging out and straight back the printer will connect, the same happens for staff. It appears random but I don't think it is because when logging into a virtual host or a terminal server these methods work everytime without fail so I feel it may be network speed or profile related, staff use roaming, students mandatory. On Windows 7 we used CON2PRT and it worked well and never failed, I know that it isn't supported on Windows 10 however. It seems bugged to me but I wondered if anyone else has had this issue and if so what you did to fix it?

We've been using CON2PRT since forever but it's recently starting doing very weird things and lots of pupils are now not getting printers unless they log on and off again. Did you find a more reliable way of installing Printers under Windows 10?

A VBS script at logon which worked fine for years under Windows 7 was no longer reliable. Group policy wasn't any better either. The PS script at logon seems a more reliable but we've had to add a desktop shortcut to all student computers to run a DOS batch file to connect printer when missing.
synaesthesia Posted May 3, 2019 Posted May 3, 2019 Still can't see how people are still struggling with GPP for the majority! Of all the printers we've ever had (Xerox, HP, Brother, Samsung, Kyocera, Konica) none have had issue installing properly with GPP using item level targetting!

Word for Word this is where I am at as well. I did however find that putting the script into the machine startup folder instead of a login script helped a little too. Also had the benefit of adding the printers once the user is logged on, taking the time out the logon process, made logins a bit snappier. Users have a shortcut to re-run if not there.

Works pretty much flawlessly. And I haven’t had to do any additional configuration aside from group policy.

3s-gtech Posted May 11, 2019 Posted May 11, 2019 Once I moved to user OU deployment with item level targeting, over computer OU without, the reliability of GPP printer deployment increased massively. I’ve never really understood why, but guess it’s to do with processing order. 1
