Hi

Has anyone else moved over to Netsweeper through Schools Broadband? Or anyone else using cloud based Netsweeper?

Thanks

Wifi? It works fine yeah, we had a custom port added for the ipads so they default to pupil web, and use the normal one for devices that we want people to log into. No Chromebooks here but plenty of ipads... No sims either - we're integris (which works fine), isn't sims local?

We have the first 50 IP's unfiltered (server, switches, printers etc), I assume at least your server will be unfiltered though which would allow any Sims updates through?

I wasn't aware netsweeper was actively being used yet by SB customers. We're still using lightspeed (and supplementing it with Netsupport DNA). Meant to be joining a webinar next week about netsweeper.

@TMBS what issues are you foreseeing with those services?

On my test migrations - fine, no real problems - just a few teething bits that have been resolved...

On my new connections - something is definitely wrong, getting really slow down but as expected up... I have cases logged for it so will let you know what happens...

I'm having real issues with speed too. Plus connections issues with SIMS, cashless catering, wifi, Chromebooks.... It's not been a good couple of weeks. I've logged the issues but the person I need to speak to is trying to resolve the broadband problem. Not sure if that's for all Schools Broadband sites, or just those who have moved to Netsweeper.

Speed issues at the moment. No solution currently for Chromebooks. Students can't use their Google accounts...

Can you not specify a manual proxy - proxylb.schoolsbroadband.net:31283 (pupil web)?

I’ve just heard they’ve found the fix for the speed issues...

We're already pushing that proxy out manually...

Hopefully if the speed issues are sorted someone will be calling me to sort our other problems out..... watch this space

What's up with your chromebooks then?

We can't currently get any device to connect to wifi unless through an unfiltered IP. With the Chromebooks we changed the proxy details on the Google Console, thinking they would then pull down the new settings but they don't. We have wiped one but it still won't connect to the wifi (It says connected though). When I use a static IP it connects and lets me register to our Google domain but then it pulls down the new proxy settings and won't connect again, or let me change the IP. I've tried using a unsecured connection but still no luck.

We've had 125 Chromebooks sat in their charging trolley for two weeks now not being used.

That's strange... can you use 31283 on another machine in school - have they definitely applied that port to your school?

I know, I can't work it out but I'm not a massive techie when it comes to filtering/firewall.

All our wired PCs in school connect using that port, it's just wifi...

Out of interest is the Wi-fi attempting to connect to the google captive portals? Eg

Another thing that you can try is to add

captive.apple.com

clients3.google.com

connectivitycheck.gstatic.com

msftncsi.com

To unblocked urls categories

This isn’t netsweeper related but any filtering solution.

I don’t believe so. You can turn ssl decryption on or off, but for there to be any level of filtering I believe the traffic must traverse the proxy. We haven’t got it yet, so I’m going on the info in the webinar.

There’s quite a few options on how to deploy the proxy settings, so hopefully you shouldn’t need to visit every device. BYOD is probably the most tricky because of the certificate you’ll need to deploy for ssl inspection, but as you suggest you could choose to turn it off on those subnets.

BYOD is the hardest as there may not be a separate subnet. Some of the smaller schools won’t do any VLANs.

Plus on Windows machines it’s getting the user to turn the proxy off while at home - unless it will work from offsite somehow.

Just a pain as Lightspeed works well with the no proxy requirements. Although I will be glad to see the end of it
