let's say I buy 100 computers each with windows XP home edition.

I then buy 100 XP PRO u/g licences.

 

let's say these 100 computers are replacing 100 computers I am re-formatting and donating to a charity.

 

Do I need to buy a new office 2003 licences for the 100 new machines if the 100 I am giving away already had office 2003 licences?

If the Office 2003 licenses weren't OEM there should be no issue using it on the new machines, as the old ones are going out blank.

Just a note... the XP Pro upgrade licenses have to remain with the machine - an upgraded OEM license is still OEM.

Ramesys told me that was not the case and that so long as it was re-downgraded back to the original OS I could recycle my XP Pro Upgrade Licences with no issues.

Yeah downgrade back to the original OS and you can recycle is what I've been told by a few people. Licensing isn't one of my strong points though. I spent about 20 minutes getting John to explain it to me over MSN the other night because I was having some issues with something.

Hmmm, I'll point to Ramesys if anyone moans then as I asked the question before buying the PCs with XP Home on to replace old ones. (Note I usually get XP Pro or Vista Business but these were special offer at Misco at the time and only had Home)

If you buy a volume licence Upgarde they no longer come in xp version and it is vista only. You do have the ability to downgrade to pro and that licence is transferable to any pc with an oem licence.

 

With respect to Office you dont buy upgrade licences they are full licences which means they are fully transferable.

 

By transferable I mean it must be removed from one pc before putting on another. And as long as you put the pc back to its origanal format you can then give them to charty.

Actually no, - that's not right (see the document from DMcCoy a couple of posts up). A Volume Licence OS upgrade is permanently assigned to the machine on which it's first used, and cannot be transferred to another device. It's all too easy to lose track of licences though, and don't get me started about Terminal Server & Office

Even software assurance doesn't mean you can move the license, however you *can* move the assurance, not that this is very helpful either.
