witch Posted November 7, 2017 Posted November 7, 2017 Vinyl wasn't baffling - analogue sounds SO MUCH better than digital. What is baffling is issuing digital recordings on vinyl - they won't sound any better than they did on CD! But tapes - yeah - very strange

unixman_again Posted November 7, 2017 Posted November 7, 2017 Pre-recorded tapes were baffling. Blank tapes were great - I've got hundreds of hours of vintage radio programs that I recorded when I was at uni. Also, some episodes of programs such as Hancocks Half Hour have only survived because of tape and people like me. The BBC wiped many of their tapes have have been on a quest to recover as much missing stuff as they can get their paws on.

Read an article recently about how small bands are finding it easier/cheaper to produce cassettes. I'm sorry - easier/cheaper than producing a CD?

I used to record the Naked Vicar Show and one night it was running late. I telephoned the station and was put through to the announcer. He said "It will be on after this advert. I'll give you an extra 30 seconds." He obviously knew what I was about to do.

witch Posted November 7, 2017 Posted November 7, 2017 I can hear the difference. Digital is TOO perfect - your ears aren't as good as that. It's a bit like seeing things in HD on TV or film - our eyes just dont see the world in that much detail so it all looks overbright and a bit flat.

My eyesight is perfect and the perfection of HD is the same to me as realising leaves have really defined edges which aren't so obvious when your prescription needs changing. My hearing is less than perfect, so the clearer the sound source the better it sounds to me. Digital every time. As for cassette tapes... For sound? You have to be kidding? They stretch far too quickly. Mag tape is rubbish for backup for the same reason!
3s-gtech Posted November 7, 2017 Posted November 7, 2017 I suffered through the joys of cassette tape on C64 - barely used it for music as my first album was on CD. Slow, unreliable, get chewed up, but they were cheap and had many a great time using them. Wouldn't go back - that's what SD cards are for!

I know there are endless arguments about this - but the fact that digital is an encoding as it were of an analogue signal means that there is a possibility for change TBH it depends on your playing medium. It always seems odd to me that people spend a lot of money on music and then play it on computers which do not have very good audio in them. It used to be that we were really careful about amplifiers, and speakers, but now that seems to be less of a concern. If you listen to music on substandard equipment, it doesnt matter what the format is, you won't get the full experience Edited November 8, 2017 by witch

I showed someone how we did data destruction on one a while ago, undoing the cassette and sticking the reel to the ceiling with blutack and let it cascade down. Last time we did it it was a 10gb tape. This time it was a 1.96TB tape (one of a couple of dozen) and it was barely a quarter unwound when I left the school 7 hours later.
