Rob_D Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 Hi Guys, We use a Magicard Dye film printer to print all of our staff ID badges. The used Dye film has readable, negative images of anything that was printed. So we're a little reticent to just throw them away. Does anyone have use or know of a good way to destroy these or render them unreadable and safe for disposal? Thanks in advance for any help. Rob.
forkies Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 Can you cut each end of the film and shred it? 1
Rob_D Posted October 20, 2017 Author Posted October 20, 2017 Can you cut each end of the film and shred it? Thanks, it might come down to that. But I was hoping to avoid having to feed 160 odd meters of ribbon through a shredder.
Marci Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 Shred or burn are about your only two options... or find a bag heading off to be collected by secure disposal company if your place use one, and drop it in. I do as above - chop off end, feed into shredder, turn on, watch with glee as it sucks it all in and shreds the lot. (The shreddings then go off to the secure disposal company) 1
maxkops Posted May 17, 2023 Posted May 17, 2023 This very problem. Shredding works. Sit spool on top and it just rotates (shredder is loud and takes about 15mins but it will get it done eventually). Tape paper into feed slot to fool auto stop mechanism. 2

maxkops Posted May 17, 2023 Posted May 17, 2023 Thanks for link, interesting and very useful if I was doing this industrially. Get through 1-2 magicard spools a year so hard to justify. I wonder if I can put those ancient office archive LTX Ultrium tapes through as well, tee hee. The pdf leaflet suggests min 60mm width, pity.
pete Posted May 17, 2023 Posted May 17, 2023 ^ For the tapes 1) Use a hacksaw and cut through to the spindle on one side. Giving you tidily contained ~10cm strips of tape. 2) Label the tape as "DESTROYED" (so no-one feeds it into an auto-loader/tape drive by mistake) and recycle.
Chris_Cook Posted May 17, 2023 Posted May 17, 2023 We found the shredder method quite messy. It did destroy the ribbons though. I'm still picking bits up from years ago.
maxkops Posted May 17, 2023 Posted May 17, 2023 Shredder successfully managed kept all output in plastic bag so mess minimal. Cleaned the rotating jaws carefully afterwards as much placcy binding in the marsh there. Some mess created, pity. Did overheat 3 times, don't think it appreciated my offering. Took circa 2h total but it gave me an excuse to prejudicially add in some extra shredding for old times sake. Feel so much better. The hacksaw tape method sounds fun. Will incorporate into my next morning exercise routine.
