Strange DVD problem

A teacher has a DVD of "I, Daniel Blake" a film by Ken Loach. It says the disk is copy protected, which is the reason, I think, that it won't play on the PC on her room, or indeed any PC that I've tried. It won't play on a DVD player either which is puzzling, yet it will play just fine on my Mac. Any idea as to why this is so? It's a genuine DVD. I can't really have a classroom full of students watching on my Mac.

You might have to reset the DRM in order to get it working.

Yeah. It's almost certainly the copy protection.

 

A lot of DVD copy protections like ARccOS or RipGuard use unreadable (corrupted) sectors on the disc which causes compatibility issues as you have found out.

 

If you install a trial version of AnyDVD or DVDFab Passkey Lite those will both tell you which type of copy protection is used on the DVD.

 

As @3s-gtech mentioned, VLC (or MPC-HC) might be able to play the DVD.

we have got a few dvd like this you have to find the right file to play it the biggest one vlc player will play this fine

Same reason they buy single user software to install on every pc, chromebooks to use with photoshop or a pay as you go 4g dongle to allow network access for a department.

I did think about that program, but it was last updated on 21 March 2005 so it might not give the correct details?

 

I guess it's a moot point now since it's a region 4 disc.

Surprised about VLC, as it's normally region agnostic. DVDFab installs the full version and then falls back to the "lite" one if you don't stump up for the license. Not used it, but 5K Player may be worth a go https://www.5kplayer.com/video-music-player/region-free-dvd-player-software.htm.

Surely the region issue is with the drive, not the software?

I'm so glad someone else has had this problem! I've had 2 copies of this disc, purchased by separate teachers 6 months apart, and neither will play. It must be a dodgy batch of discs. Our solution was to use MakeMKV to rip the main movie off the disc, then burn it as a file onto a new DVD and call it 'backup copy'. That works fine. The copyright's a bit of a grey area but I reckon as long as the copy is kept with the genuine disc it's OK.
