DCUK6 Posted October 17, 2017 Posted October 17, 2017 Hi, We have a number of laptops all same brand and model and in less than 2 years, 1/3rd of them have dead batteries. Batteries wont accept any charge at all. Never experienced this with any laptops before, i know you can get the odd duff but 1/3rd of all laptops in one model. The laptops themselves have a 3 year warranty but the batteries have only 1 apparently. Is there any more we can request from the company? Seems either the battery or BMS is really cheap and failed. Waiting for the reply saying, sorry you have to pay. All laptops have light use and kept in charging trolleys. Note: Laptops not from any company in this forum.
NB9457 Posted October 17, 2017 Posted October 17, 2017 Are the charging trolleys on timers? Some laptops don't cope well with being plugged in 24/7 so this can drastically reduce their life.

Seems like its done more harm than good though, 9 years in IT @ 3 school and always had trolleys that charged constantly and never had to change a battery. Think it more comes down to i buy good brands, these are cheap of the cheap.
atcoates Posted October 17, 2017 Posted October 17, 2017 We have dell managed laptop carts and they have no timing functionality. Dells website says the battery can not be overcharged. We also have trolleys in other schools with timers. It has made no difference to our battery life whether they are plugged in 24/7 on charge or on a timer. We have about 400 dell laptops. Think modern lithium ion batteries are much better at self management. What make and model are the laptops, perhaps others have had similar experiences.

Think it more comes down to i buy good brands, these are cheap of the cheap. We had similar experience, cheap laptops don't seem to cope too well being left on a lot, or being used much really. Usually try stick with Dell or HP now for laptops where possible, bit dearer but they've always been more reliable and lived longer, so when you factor in total cost of ownership, they can scale with the cheap stuff.
DCUK6 Posted October 17, 2017 Author Posted October 17, 2017 After messing about getting serials etc, removing and inserting batteries, 2 of them now work and cant get them to do it again. These are rebranded Clevo's. I tend to stick to HP or Lenovo laptops.
hamid-softhands Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 Usually battery life is 1 year if it's used every day, all the time. After this period, cells inside tend to become weak. Since you have had laptops for 2 years, most likely its time to change batteries. 1

dapaulio Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 (edited) I had a batch of 12 tosh laptops where they all had battery issues. All batteries were recalled and new ones were sent out. You may have a case is a third of them died within the year. 1 to 2 years is generally quite good given the hammering they get. If they are genuine batteries I would expect them to last year or two with daily use. I then replace them with eBay £10 specials and generally I get maybe just over a year, on some maybe up to 2. For a tenner can’t grumble really just have to be a bit picky which seller you get them from as some sell dodgy imports. Edited October 20, 2017 by dapaulio
hamid-softhands Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 We stock decent quality laptop batteries and they tend to give 2.30 hours on full charge. Ofcourse not as cheap as ebay £10 ones but we ensure quality and reliability. Feel free to give me shout for any needs.

3s-gtech Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 We're finding our Lenovo x130s are now struggling, getting about 1 hour of use from a full charge. Not bad for five year old machines. Unfortunately, replacement genuine batteries are £120 each!
