How does it define ‘same network’?

 

In the same subnet? Same public IP? I work for a MAT with two internet connections, if I try to monitor a computer in the school with public IP A from a computer in public IP B, does it go over the internet or the WAN?

Aye AbTutor wise the main problem we had was things like laptop trolleys, as we don't know what room they'd be in all the teacher desktops would have to be covered so it worked out like 65~ teacher licenses. Doing it just for fixed desktops in suites etc it comes out nicely as you said Might have to check and see what their latest pricing is.

I'm presuming that if you installed AB Tutor on to a USB stick and kept it with the laptop trolleys, then any teacher using the trolleys could simply just plug in the USB and run AB Tutor from there. That would then reduce the number of licenses you need for the control program.

 

AB Tutor is the cheapest I've seen. But yes, they are a small company and feature wise they can't compete with the likes of NetSupport or Impero. But their product is far cheaper.

We appreciate that that's a big concern for the majority of schools these days; enrolment numbers perpetually creeping up while budgets continue to spiral downwards - fortunately, our cost-per-client has been flat for at least the past 5 years.

 

I definitely would urge you to look at LanSchool, or at least get it on your radar for when your next renewal comes up. LanSchool 8 (released last year) added a raft of new safeguarding features, as well as an entirely new reporting module, and the price actually decreased.

In the example you have given we should be able to get all the traffic routing over your WAN. If you were outside this (at home for example) the data from the machines would be routed across the internet. Hope that helps.

I am genuinely interested in this by the way, I’m not just grilling you for the lols. We are going to be getting rid of our CC4 network over the course of the next year and we are going to need something to replace RM Tutor. Your product sounds like an interesting option.

 

As long as you as you don’t have overly aggressive salespeople like Impero, you could well be in with a chance!

I agree, we have just got Veyon up an running here as the school are refusing to pay for anything and it works wonderfully. Very easy setup can be pushed out via SCCM with a script and then you're ready to go. Really straight forward process and free!

Does it need a server or run off a teacher PC? How do you push out the config?

Run off the teacher PC and looks up Computer names via Active Directory. We push out the config via SCCM along with the install, you could equally push it out via GPO, once the program launches it looks for a config file and runs it so if you ever wanted to update it you could just push out the updated config file.

I have already been in contact with NetSupport about them being a candidate to replace RM tutor. We got into contact after BETT. They’re an option but we need to look at several candidates. So far, I’ve been home in contact with

 

Lanschool

NetSupport

ABtutor

 

I’m reluctant to contact Impero because of previous bad experiences and because of their “everything and the kitchen sink” approach. I don’t want most of the functionality their product provides and they offer no way of separating it.

 

We’re going to look at Veyon as well and Senso should be an option.
