Projector Lifespan

What is your projector lifespan before considering replacements ?

 

Just had a Epson EB-X11 that was installed in May 2012 bulb go (red light flashing). Is it worth replacing the bulb not knowing it is the bulb or just replacing the unit considering it's age ? I'm not even sure how many hours it's done

I'd be keeping that going still IMO. I work to about a 6-7 year replacement plan now for projectors - after that, the bulbs seem to pop more.

Keep the X11's going. Make sure you get a good one and not a Chinese bulb. @Millgate have always got me good bulbs.

Bulb it is, very rare for bulbs to go on this site. I've still got some projectors here that are 10+ years old still on their original bulb with high mileage

I tend to write off projectors either when the quality in projection dips or when the bulbs become worse value than a new projector with a longer life bulb. For instance when a 1000hour bulb needs replacing at £100 and I can get a newer 3000hour projector for less than £300.

That's what I'm thinking, EB-X27s are about £275+vat, on that cost it's about £55 a year for a projector over a 5 year lifespan. Depends on budgets of course and if you can afford to replace.

Ironically we're looking at getting some EB-X27's now once we check they are ok with our current projectors install location (and we can adapt the mounting plate from the Sanyo's thats been up the best part of 15 years)

 

Sometimes it can be cheaper to replace an entire unit as they seem to be falling into the disposable range

When we bought projectors this was my strategy. Buy Epson with three years warranty. When projector was nearing three years old we'd ring up and say bulb is very dim. Epson would send a new bulb. When that bulb went in and bulb failed we'd buy new projector and repeat process. Edited September 29, 2017 by atcoates

We replace them when we cannot fix them, still have plenty of Epson X5 projectors that have been in use for over 10 years now.

@caffrey that's a comment well worthy of a thank you as you must have a magic formula at work there with teaching staff who actually treat the kit with respect and switch it off when it's not in use.

 

Getting most of my lot to turn off during breaks and lunch seems to be an impossibility and I've even come in the next day and found the occasional projector on and still projecting. Then they have the cheek to say the bulb needs replacing because the unit's gone dim

Oh they get left on, I guess I'm just lucky! Some are worse than others, this one in question does get used a lot

I've considered screens but projectors are still cheaper and getting cheaper by the day and like what was said earlier they are becoming a consumable rather than an asset. I'd like to fit TV's myself but ideally it needs a big display

Just had the quote through for an original OEM Epson bulb for the X11 - £140 + VAT , new projector is £295 + VAT. Not sure it's worth the gamble

I have started to roll out casio led projectors. Lamp life is supposed to be 20000 hours, which at 8 hours a day, 200 days a year should mean 12 years on life. Used them in other schools I've worked in and love the zero maintenance. 5 years warranty too.
