garethEds Posted September 22, 2017 Posted September 22, 2017 Random question this morning as Mrs E and I plan our future house extension. We have a garage (oooo get us), and it lets water in so I might rebuild it - but then think - does anyone actually use their garage to park their car or simply as a junk store? Mine is a junk store. I'm toying with the idea of knocking it down and just building a small shed instead to store my bikes and little bits of tools etc. Do people still need or use garages/ Gareth
Tesla Posted September 22, 2017 Posted September 22, 2017 At my rents, for as long as i can remember, they've always had houses with garages. Every so often they'll clear it out just enough to get a car in, then take the car back out and it'll slowly fill with more junk, this probably happens once every couple of years...
mikeprice Posted September 22, 2017 Posted September 22, 2017 the previous owners of my house converted it into a second lounge I am using it as a second TV room to escape from the 1 million episodes of Coronation Street that seem to be broadcast every week or I wil be as soon as I get another TV and connect it up I mean - really - just how many arguments, disasters, affairs, murders and pints in the Rovers do we NEED in one week!!!! 2
elsiegee40 Posted September 22, 2017 Posted September 22, 2017 We have a double garage - posh eh! - and half is used for storage... bikes, tools, the freezer, the very long ladder, etc. The other half is kept clear for a car... or heaps of stuff in transit between home and university... or DIY use. We have a shed too with the garden stuff in it. Now daughter has moved out, the car use has greatly diminished, but the other uses justify having the garage for us.

Where I live there is little parking everyone has 2 spaces drive and garage (then a few visitor spots theres not really any road) but bar me just one of them uses their garage for a car (and one for their bikes) and cars are just basically left in daft places all the time. To compound this virtually all of them have 2 cars one of them has been known to have up to 5 so crummy parking like this isn't uncommon

So much parking where I live now we can store 20 cars and have done before for a wedding! We don't have a garage unfortunately but we have a very spacious loft and a big Keter shed where I store most things in at the moment I think it's a 10x8! I can't use our loft as I haven't boarded it up yet and cluster flies are a worry at the moment as we had them last year!!
3s-gtech Posted September 22, 2017 Posted September 22, 2017 As things currently stand, getting rid of the garage will most likely knock money off your house, but that does partly depend on whether it's internal or external. Generally I'd advise to leave it be - if you want to extend your house, do it as a separate job. If you want to use it as a shed, change the door and rack it out. It can always be put back that way.

sted Posted September 22, 2017 Posted September 22, 2017 A Neighbour Watch Police Office gave a talk a while ago where he said they recommended that you leave your car out so it looks like the house is occupied but with most cars these days been stolen by breaking in and stealing the keys that just means someone knows what car you have so if they want a golf say then they know exactly where to get one

You'd have to push it in. I'm musing on splitting it in two, and joining the back to the kitchen to allow direct access to aforementioned white goods. The bike can stay in the front.

arwen Posted September 22, 2017 Posted September 22, 2017 I can just about squeeze my car into my garage, but you are lucky if I have half an inch of space at either side! Instead my garage if full of bikes (both push and motorcycles) and all the related kit that comes with them and cars. I wouldn't be without a garage now. If I didn't have motorcycles though, I'd be tempted to simply make a garage a large extension of the house.

unixman_again Posted September 22, 2017 Posted September 22, 2017 My garage gets used for three things : making things - my bench and vice are in there my weights and bench are in there drying the washing in the winter - I can do this in the washer/dryer but a couple of fans are much cheaper to run and it drys fine With that, the car sits on the drive outside. The weight bench takes up about 1/3 of the garage and more if you include my wall mounted chinup bar. The bar also gets used to hold a safety post when I want to use by cycle rollers.
