DPM 2012r2 upgrade to 2016

Hi Guys

 

having a fun time trying to upgrade DPM from 2012r2 to 2016.

 

First attempt failed so i restored the database from our secondary DPM server and ran DPMsync. All back to normal for round two.

 

Now when i try to run the upgrade again im getting the following error

 

Ive got no clue where to even start with this and its driving me crazy.

 

Has anyone managed to successfully upgrade from DPM 2012r2 to 2016?

Are you running it Physical or Virtual?

 

When doing DPM in the past, when we went from 2010 to 2016, we made a new VM with Server 2016 and installed 2016 DPM and essentially started from scratch, usually much easier and you know exactly where you stand, we then archived the data from the old DPM server inline with our retention/age policy.

 

Whilst not a direct solution to your problem, could maybe prove better in the long run.

I did this last week, it was a bit of a pain what version of SQL are you using with your DPM 2012r2 install, what server OS and what's your DPM version number then I will let you know what steps I took based on your current setup.

its a physical server, its getting to the point where im thinking of just starting fresh

The version of SQL is 2012, the OS im running is 2012 r2 and the DPM version is 4.2.1594.0

Hi Vicky, you will need to first stop your DPM services then upgrade your version of SQL to SQL2014 with SP1 (don't install SP2 as it's not comparable) reboot the server. From there you then can do an in place upgrade to DPM 2016.

 

The only thing I would say is there have been a change with store in DPM 2016 and I had to wipe our storage change the partition type to fit in with the new modem storage would be worth having a look on line about setting up DPM 2016 storage.

I upgraded ours a few months back and went really smoothly, no major issues.

 

Maybe make sure you’ve updated the OS and DPM from MS update online before trying the upgrade again?
