KarlGoddard Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 I'm after a PDA with GPS and wondered what would be a 'good' one to get. Never had a PDA before so I'm not up to speed on what models I shold look at and which ones to avoid Mainly using it GPS stuff, initially for a project I want to put together using the FutureLab mScape software but I'd like to be able to use it as a test bed for other school uses as well. Any pointers would be great Thanks!

m25man Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 I have an HTC TyTN II GPS, WiFi, BT, GPRS, Edge, 3G slidy keyboard... It's definately the best tool I have ever owned although it's value as a phone is debateable. During my recent tour of duty at CeBit last week it was interesting to see, anybody from Sales and Marketing have blackberries and matching ties! Everyone there in a technical role had HTC's many running WM6.1 (Windows answer to the IPhones touch UI) However that may all change now Apple have licensed Activesync for the Ipod and IPhone!

None of them actually use the onboard video cards properly. This means that they refresh the screen more slowly and burn more power as they have to use the CPU the whole time to render the images on screen. I have never managed to get a decent stream to work with the native player and the network browser doesn't work in WM6 properly where my old IPAQ browses a W2K3 lan with no problem and can playback the NewstalkZB live stream where the HTC can't do either but I have every faith that the next firmware update will patch these issues. Mind you, Who wants to watch a video on a screen the size of a large stamp and who listens to NewstalkZB anyway!

Got back home from going out drinking with friends and didn't feel like sleeping. Usually I get up late and work late which is why I'm on here at such ridiculous times (my local time). The main issue that I have with my HTC is that it slows down lots when scrolling down a large email.

I think you're right geoff.......don't forget push email and some proper productivity apps through the sdk, HSDPA in iphone rev 2.0 and you've got a serious business contender. I really like blackberry's - does that make me a bad person, i really don't want to be associated with salesmen in ties

deerwood Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 I'm a fan of the 02 Orbits. New one looks funky. I have the new O2 Orbit2. It is basically the HTC Touch in O2 guise. The original poster requested GPS built in. True, the O2 Orbit 2 does have GPS but the CoPilot software is naff; the maps are outdated (my street isn't included though it was constructed 8 years ago!) and GPS reception is very flaky without an external antenna.
Chris Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 I agree with deerwood, copilot software with xda orbit 2 is outdated. Also doesnt always tell quickest route. compared to garmin which I have not a good GPS but a good phone and lightweight and good PDA
