I'd question what the bus driver was doing, given he had just pulled away from the oracle stop just beyond the brow of the hill? Most drivers only do 15-20 mph round there as they approach traffic, lights and a pedestrian zone.

The 17's stop by The Oracle is right at the other end of that road so there would have been a chance to build up speed, but there's a tight chicane with speed hump where the bus comes around the corner. I'm guessing the accelerator was jammed for one reason or another. All buses owned by Reading Buses (the operator) have a ridiculous amount of CCTV onboard. I wonder if we'll ever get to see it?

 

The slightly concerning thing is the reason the CCTV camera is pointed like that is to cover the entrance to The Purple Turtle bar, as well as the massive queue (often 200+ people) that forms along that strip of pavement every friday and saturday night. If it happened 8 hours previously (the 17 is a 24 hour route) potentially a lot of people would have been hit (including me who may or may not have been in the PT queue that night )
