jslate1980 Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 Hi The Head of Sixth Form at my school, has requested that Linkedin be unblocked for sixth form students. He said that universities are requesting that they have an account before applying for courses. I understand Linkedin is a social network site for business, but I am interested on what peoples views are on this? Jon
jthompson Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 Personally, I find the site incredibly frustrating and I can't get on with it at all. Never have I felt more nagged than when I'm trying to use LinkedIn! However many of the little "x" things I click on to dismiss tips and suggestions, more of them just come back at the next page load asking for more and more information. I hate it. However, seeing as it exists and probably isn't going to die off for a while yet, it perhaps makes sense for students to be given some guidance in using it. I find it surprising that universities would require applicants to use LinkedIn, though. 1
Cache Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 Our sixth form were doing a course in their tutorial lesson at one point and needed access (think it was the barclays skillwise thingy) - passed it up to the head to approve and granted access in tha room during the tutorial lessons. 1
pete Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 It's allowed for our sixth form at the request of Careers & PD lessons. Shenanigans have been minimal (I don't think there have been any). 1
Sylv3r Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 I must admit I was on the site many years ago, but left due to the constant cold calling. I am not really sure what the benefit is of sixth form students being on the site. It does however seem that they reduced the minimum age from 18 to 13 to attract students to the site - LinkedIn lowers age limit to 13 in student push - Telegraph - is it a ploy to gain advertising revenue?
Oddbod Posted June 27, 2017 Posted June 27, 2017 A ploy to gain advertising revenue… Much less find a job through former work mates… which is what it used to be. But that doesn't generate any money for them… So in comes the targeted marketing. And countless recruiters harvesting names for ‘potential positions’ that never materialise. Cynic, Moi?
