Point to Point Wireless over about 1 mile

Hi,

 

I need to connect two buildings that are about 1 mile away (ish) as the crow flies, could this be accomplished with some form of point to point wireless dish? Any suggestions?

Yes it can.

 

Personally done a lot of these with Repeatit devices. Cambium are also a very good manufacturer of PtP links.

 

What sort of speed you looking for?

Defiantly the important question, LOS will make things much easier.

+1 for Ubiquiti Nano Bridge. Excellent product and works even without LOS

We run 2 sets of AirFiber 5 and 1 set of NanoBeam AC in our trust.

 

Each one behaves differently to the others. We tried a NanoBeam AC for our link to our nursery, which is just about 150m with LOS. Constant dropping signals and problems due to interference. Switched out for an AirFiber 5 and we've had zero issues since.

 

My point is that for a PTP link, you need to get it surveyed properly before putting in equipment. Every link is different, and will require a different antenna, or different type of equipment.

 

Sure, you can try using cheap gear and see if it works, but you're asking for trouble really doing it that way.

There is very little change in elevation but there are tons of buildings in the way, so I don't know if it will work as not really LoS. May have to have a rethink.

You do need clear line of sight unfortunately without any obstructions to make P2P Wireless Links work. Common solution is to have an AP mounted on a pole on the roof if that gives the elevation and clear view. As far as products go many vendors produce external APs fit for purpose but the trick is to get the correct antennas for the job. Directional antennas are essential to give you a stable and fast connection and if would recommend you get proper site survey done before purchasing anything at all, even if you can get line of sight.

Ubiquity does a good job for the money.

I have been told Ubiquiti doesn't need LoS but can bounce around buildings (along with others) if not too far but you would loose speed. Don't hold me to it as that's just word of mouth. I would talk to a specialist. You could look at mounting poles to get elevation over the buildings.

The real question is how critical is the link? Reliability costs. A point to point fibre is the most reliable solution but that is big bucks.....

Around here we have a lot of wireless internet and Ubiquiti kit is used in a lot of instances with good results but you need that sight for reliability.
