Print Management - Deployment

Hi All

 

Taken new delivery of a new fleet of photocopiers

 

I was all efficient and set them up in print management ready to go (just waited for them to be here and setup on the IP i'd already set)

 

All was well, I had deployed via print management, to attach them to the IT Admin GPO, they've been sat on my account wherever i login, and today i could print.

 

Now i've gone to deploy via the Staff GPO (and a couple of others), and nothing is doing, they arent appearing, i cant see anything in eventvwr, i have gpupdate/ force on server and locally, restarted machine numerous times.

 

Anyone got any clues?

Had to deploy via gpp rather than print management but this isn't ideal as I cant seem to save presets such as job holding without going round to each computer...

Our "job holding" seems to stick if set as default on the print server (deployed by GPP).

Not sure, but I didn't have much luck with Print Management when I tried it (admittedly the last time was 2 or 3 years ago) so I tend to use GPP which works brilliantly for me. I do a "Delete All Network Printers" which is probably only necessary if changing printers then add them all in using item level targeting where appropriate and to set default printers. Others report problems and prefer scripting.

Today me is having 0 luck

 

I can't seem to get the settings to propagate down when they install, so at the moment I cant get the printers to install and only print single sided by default. I have adjusted printer settings on both the shared printer, and through the Printer Properties > Advanced > Printing Defaults... tab

 

Which is the best GPP to use to push these new settings out? Do i just leave it as create, or change it to replace/update?

I have it set to Update which should change settings if you change the defaults on the server.

 

As for deleting say office printers. I found doing a 'Delete All' slowed down logins as it would delete the virtual print queue each time and everyone wants it anyway. So only use this for a sort time while moving over to the new system. So for things like office printers, use update and set item level so it only installs for certain user groups (IE Admin printer for Admin Staff). Then copy that printer and change it to 'Delete'. Change the item level targeting to 'Is not' and it should remove the printer if a non admin logins in. Your virtual queue should just be set to 'Update' as everyone will get it.

So I'm assuming by your methods, you delete the copiers at each logon, then it reapplies the printers (twice, to assign defaults?)

 

If i view printer preference defaults via the print management, it is the same as i have tried to set, but this doesn't seem to have propagated down. May add the Delete all and see what fresh hell that introduces

Yep, deletes them all as some people aren't very good at regularly using the machines (though others have pointed out this may add some extra time), adds them in and does a second update pass to set defaults.

Eugh, this works except the job storage bit leaves an option ticked even if i untick it in defaults, which is really annoying.

 

Also, default printer option is greyed out...any ideas on that???

Alas, looks like it's because i'm using computer configuration rather than user...

I know this thread is old but I came across this problem today and found a fix. When setting the group preference at the computer level the default printer checkbox is greyed out, you can only select it when using a user policy.

To get round this find the unique ID of the policy (under the Details tab) and then edit the XML file for the policy, mine was found here: c:\adds\sysvol\sysvol\\Policies\\machine\preferences\printers

For the printers you want to set as default change default="0" to default="1"

If you edit the policy again the checkbox is still greyed out but it's ticked.

Just to backtrack a little bit, what copiers are they? If they're RICOH copiers you can use Print Driver Packager NX to adjust your print driver before deploying- this allows you to set options such as print type (locked requiring password etc) and single/double sided, mono/colour etc

We do have Ricohs, but they aren't to be the main ones, our main ones are kyoceras.

Presumably the ID of the GPO (in the "Details" tab). If I look at mine (in Users, as that's where my GPP is) there's an XML in the appropriate folder.

 

P.S. The copiers here are Canons.
