boomam Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 Hi. Ive enabled Volume Shadow Copy on the drive that holds the users home folders. Although its enabled on the entire drive, of which 180Gb of it is used, and only 15Gb of that is home folders, im hoping that the 50Gb limit ive set will suffice, as its generally just the home folders that change alot. Anyway. How do i access the shadow copys? I thought it was just a case of right clicking on a file/folder/drive and going to the shadow copy tab. But its not there. Also, how do i expose this functionality to the users so that they can restore the copys themselves? Thanks in advance all. .
elsiegee40 Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 Right click and bring up the Properties of the file or folder where you need to look for the shadow. Go to the Previous Versions tab Double click on the date/time that you want
cookie_monster Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 The shadow copies will only use a percentage of available disk space and then it deletes the oldest copy. To access them do as elsiegee40 says but remember that you can't see them directly on the server you need to be viewing the folder through a share path.
boomam Posted March 13, 2008 Author Posted March 13, 2008 So the previous versions cant be seen from the server itself? Odd that is. Ive browsed to the home folders from my workstation and i can see the previous versions tab. Does that also apply to the users? (gonna test now).

Depending on your setup, it may be better nor to advertise its existance too widely. It's better that users take care than rhey start to rely on Previous Versions.

It appears that it can only be accessed by staff. So the only people who know about it are myself, and the just informed, allways asking for access to backups, teacher that shall remain nameless. .

It's a client technology that is designed to allow users to restore their own work so that is how it's designed to function. I can imagine the changes in files would create a massive number of shadow copies very quickly, or is windows more clever than this? You can set how often snapshots are taken (twice per day default) and set how much disk space they can use so it shouldn't be a problem. Though ideally you wouldn't shadow roaming profiles but it can be unavoidable in some situations. Edited March 13, 2008 by cookie_monster

button_ripple Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 kinda related topic: our server will not delete the older shadows automatically, it just keeps creating them twice a day and then increasing the quota to allow for more to be created. HELP!

Im gonna DL and stick it on my storage area anyway, but am i gonna need it if the workstations have picked up the correct tab anyway?

The XP clients which I have dealt with have not had this, maybe it was included in your base image. @boomam - you only need it if the tab does not show up. If it shows up for staff and not students it could be being installed on a per user basis for the staff and not being installed per machine.
boomam Posted March 13, 2008 Author Posted March 13, 2008 I think its a file properties thing tbh. As the pupils, unknown to me prior to now, cant access file properties. No biddy that though, as theres nothing there that the kids need anyway, this way, they cant abuse it either.
SYNACK Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 The Shadow Copy Client was included in XP SP2. Ah, that would explain why. When I was rolling that out it was quite a while ago and the machines must have still been SP1 at that stage.
