Ubiquiti Switches

After a conversation with @mrbios I'm now seriously considering moving to Ubiquiti Switches & was just after any feedback from others using them & if anyone had any major issues with failures etc?

 

We are looking at implementing a whole new infrastructure with new fibres & expanding to a 10G backbone, replacing some extremely old HP kit.

 

The prices I've been quoted are on a different level to anything else I've received and would really free up some money for other projects. Is anyone using these switches as their core or just for edge purposes?

Use some of their products both at home, and installed them on some jobs I've done. Would you be looking at the UniFi lineup or EdgeSwitch?

Would be looking at the EdgeSwitch - a mixture of the PoE & non PoE Edge/Lite switches & potentially a couple of the 16 port 10GB Aggregation switches.

Bear in mind they aren't full Layer 3. So, you'll still need something to do routing if you want to do anything beyond 16 static routes/200 entries in an ARP table. Edited June 7, 2017 by localzuk

I'm getting quotes for a whole system right now, I already have ubiquity wireless and a single switch for testing and I love it. I haven't yet needed intervlan routing but I assume there is a ubiquity unifi router? Does the USG do this?

The only thing to consider with the unifi switches is that changing the VLAN on a port in the controller takes the switch offline for a few seconds - long enough to disrupt everyone.

I recently purchased and installed two EdgeSwitches as a core switch (Or two). InterVLAN routing between 5 networks. We're a very small networks compared to a lot of peoples but they seem good and easy to manage.

The EdgeSwitches are much better in terms of options, they just need to be indiviudally managed. The unifi switches are easier to manage but to few options in my opinion.

I run the EdgeSwitch in my home lab, all is good except that the switch does not support well with DAC cable.

The switches basically don't like them, they are temperamentalat best. You are better off buying extra SFPs and fibre, more reliable at the moment and theya ren't expensive enough not to choose this option

Firmware issues affect DAC cables currently, they were testing them a while ago but have since said it's best to stick to sfp+ modules in the interim.

Has anyone used the Ubiquiti own SFP+ modules? They are quite a bit cheaper than the Mikrotik ones.

Yes we do and they have been fine.

I have some SFP ones on order, but have found my existing HP ones work fine. I'm just going to trunk some fibre cables so purchased more.

I have a Full Unifi setup (42 Switches in total) + 76 AP's and use an edge router pro-8 it flies! Use Fireworks and MicroTik SPF & SFP+ mods. I have found them to be very reliable. I had 3 switches which were getting to hot and RMA'd them no issues at all since thankfully. Been installed since Feb great setup for a Big School (2000 users) I was a bit hesitant to start with but so far no complaints at all. looking at the unifi roadmap I feel very re-assured as later this year they are going to start lifetime warranty on the new line of XG & HDproducts ! https://community.ubnt.com/t5/Ubiquiti-Announcements-and-News/UniFi-The-Beginning-of-The-Higher-Market-Disruption/ba-p/1919286

The management IP of the switch can't be on anything but VLAN1, but you can access the management interface and telnet from every VLAN. So set that IP address to something outside your VLANs (Otherwise it will complain when setting up routing) and just access it by the VLAN gateway address.

Yep. You also need a separate IP range for your router. PM if you get stuck, happy to help.

I am using Ubiquiti Unifi switch as my edge switches, except for the compatibility issue with DAC cables, everything is fine. Now I use fs.com SFP+ SR optics and OM3 cables, it is prefect.
