LAN Settings automatically detect settings

At one of my primaries i have took over google chrome is hanging when it loads up. In the bottom left hand corner it says downloading proxy settings. They don't have a proxy and if i untick it by logging in as me it works fine.

 

Have been looking group policy and cannot see the setting anywhere to change it to untick the setting. Am i missing it somewhere?

Have you checked that you don't have a wpad proxy file set on the DHCP server?

 

If you use the find proxy tool it's really good at telling you whats happening:

 

FindProxyForURL

 

*caus I'm guessing it's trying to load some old proxy config, that is wrong/doesn't exist?

Yes that would make sense. I downloaded the tool but it could not find anything it just gives me a blank text document.

No just blank. Are you running this on your machine or on the dhcp server?

I don't think that's right... I think it just should say nothing found for each.

 

No just ran the findproxy on a normal workstation.

Hmm, is that on a workstation with "automatically detect settings" still checked?

 

I wonder if someone set the proxy with the netsh command previously??

 

What happens with the netsh command?? netsh winhttp show proxy

You on the latest version of Chrome? Do you have issues in Internet Explorer?

 

Maybe try seeing on your web filter, do a report for a certain workstation that you try use Chrome on? See where its trying to go?

Will need to check version of chrome. IE i have no issues it is just chrome. However the teacher wants/needs to use chrome.

Do you have any Group Policy templates installed for Google Chrome?

 

We specify a proxy here, and we found initially that Chrome wouldn't pick up the IE proxy settings as expected until after IE had been launched (this was down to our students having a mandatory profile). We had to explicitly configure Chrome's proxy options using the Group Policy templates that Google provided for Chrome (User Configuration → Policies → Administrative Templates → Google → Google Chrome → Proxy server).

 

Since you aren't using a proxy, it might be worth checking that there are no Chrome-specific GP settings tripping you up.

You can go to: chrome://policy and it should show any that any policies that are applied from group policy

Ok just tried it on my laptop which is not connected to the domain and it happens on mine as well.

If you can't work out what's behind the behaviour, you can use GP to force Chrome's proxy setting to 'Never use a proxy' (i.e positively tell it to not use a proxy).

Think we posted at the same time but my off domain laptop had same issue with it downloading the proxy script.

That's useful! I didn't know about that page.

 

Perhaps try installing Vivaldi browser (based on Chromium) on the off-domain laptop and see if it behaves the same as Chrome. You'd need to look at vivaldi://policy in that case.

Does this school use the same ISP as the others?

 

This has to be something network related surely? Have you done a web filter report see if anything is blocked, could be an indication what it's trying to do?

No they don't that could be a good spot. The other 3 primaries all use EXA Broadband whilst this one uses schools broadband.

With Schools Broadband here - you may have the Google proxy setup at Schools Broadband's end, without using the proxy files on the local computers - could cause problems if its pupil filtering trying to access google?

Still not managed to figure this one out. Schools broadband are saying it is not them but i have my doubts. Anymore ideas of what i could run to see why this is happening?

Does this happen outside of the school?

 

I know In the school I am at we use smoothwall but instead of typing the proxy in all the time for off domain laptops we changed our dhcp so the default gateway is our smoothwall server and then created a transparent proxy in smoothwall to use port 80.

Since you tried on a few different machines its not likely an extension but worth a check anyway.

I've seen dodgy extensions try to control proxy settings before.

Edit: also have you tried incognito mode, that bypasses most extensions?

Chrome issue is still present. It is not an extension and after checking some other non domain computers they all get the same issue. The filtering is Fortinet but @SchoolsBroadband say it is not them however at one of my other primaries with the exact same server setup they are not having the issue.

 

Anyone got any ideas what this could be now?

Not sure how the Fortinet filtering works, we have Lightspeed here. Are you able to assign a user / ip address to have no filtering? On Lightspeed you can set a user to "Allow All" which although is still filtered, it's vastly less filtered.

 

If you can do that and test it, and Chrome works ok it proves that it's something to do with your filtering?
