Photographers! Back ups how do you do it?

Hi all,

 

So I am taking up photography a bit more seriously and want to back up my photos.

 

I've signed up for Flickr as an online back up and way to share my photos.

 

I also have a 500gb usb external HDD that I use as a file and photo back up.

 

Should I invest in another external HDD just for photos or a NAS?

 

What do you do too?

I use 2 2TB external hard drives + my laptop. Backup from laptop to 1 HDD every time I take some pics and then HDD 1 is backed up weekly to the 2nd HDD which I keep in a different place to HDD 1. Obviously the more I take the more I backup across the 3 devices. I know online/cloud backup seems to be the way to go but at least this way I keep control of my pics and can choose what I share. I have all my photos on a RAID'ed NAS at home and then upload to google drive as a backup.

I have two large (4TB) portable HDDs which I sync documents, photos etc. onto and then keep one at work and one at home. Not only an easy and fairly resilient backup regime, it means I've got a copy of my files at work if I need them!

What do you do too?

 

At school, we're considering moving all our photos and videos to Google Drive, then having those Drive files synced to a NAS or similar, just in case there's an issue with Drive one day.

 

For data backups in general, is anyone using / considering a bank deposit box? They actually look quite affordable, and should, of course, be safe.

I backup mine to my NAS, then during the night that backs it self up to crashplan.

Phone photos sync to flickr, google photos automatically.

 

Camera photos copy to raidz2 on my server, then use flickr2folder to sync to flickr, and google photo backup to sync to google, although that's terrible at noticing new files on network drives.

Mine's an old school Buffalo TeraStation with 4 hard drives.

You win the NAS-off. Did you nick that from work? No chance I'd be able to afford something like that!!

No, I did get the old network cabinet it's in from work though. Of course the harddrives in it cost way more

I'm always a bit weary of backing up photos in the cloud, I've heard that their "questionable content filtering" can be a bit over zealous and delete picture that it's algorithm decides to be in breach of their terms of service when they're just pictures of your family beach holiday in Benidorm. I'd hate to lose photos of my kids because or some filtering error.

I back mine up to my home NAS and use my Amazon drive to make doubly sure they are safe!

Ive decided I am going to buy another HDD as a second back up.

I've got myself a 128GB Kingston SSD in my old case with my old motherboard, CPU, RAM etc. and loaded Windows Server 2012 on it (the latest legal licence I own for Windows Server). My intention is to pick up 4 2TB NAS/SAN/Datacentre level hard drives and run them in RAID 5 (I only have space in the case for this many). I'll probably configure them in RAID using Windows Server 2012 disk pool (never tried it before) then pass that storage down to a virtual machine hosted on the Hyper-V role I have installed.

 

When I get the money to purchase those 4 HDD's, anyway.

I use flickr as a means to share and preserve photos I want to keep (I set photos to private if I don't want anyone else to see them.

 

At home I've 2 1Tb drives in my pc that are set up on a mirrored RAID. This is my "backup dumping ground". Once I've got One Drive set up at work, I may use that as my off site backup...

Cloud backups are a) so they're easy to share, b) so google photos does cool AI stuff with them, makes videos etc, c) if your house burns down, and d) mobile devices.

 

RAID for if a drive fails, Snapshots if you're an idiot and delete stuff you didn't mean to, and a powered off external drive disconnected in case there's a lightning storm

I'm not a pro but I use SmugMug for my photos. It's designed for more pro users so I'm happy with my photos and vids going there. No worries about storage constraints and it's got a reasonable way to share with family.
