Where Can I Learn Linux?

Can anyone recommend a website than can teach me Linux. I don't have a clue about it! Not even the stuff you'd take for granted, such as what "wine" is or does! The less technikal the better, as I'm used to Windows!!!

Personally I learned Linux (and almost everything else about computers) by setting myself a task then working out how to do it. For example one of the first things I did was to setup Apache. This involved getting Linux on a machine and booting up then installing apache and configuring it.

 

I don't think you can learn everything at once, you just need enough to be able to do constructive things. Ironically I seem to recall having a similar problem getting my head round Active Directory...

 

Anyhow, another thing I would recommend is to find your local Linux Users Group. If you go here:

You should be able to find them. Go along to a few meetings, get to know them, etc. Very handy people to know and will help you out as much as you want. Also they will usually have a regular 'install fest' where you can bring a machine in and install Linux with the safety net of a room full of Linux enthusiasts.

 

Last but not least, you can always post a question here and we will do our best to help.

I think you should try downloading a bootable CD, something like Knoppix, or go the whole hog and download Mandrake/Mandriva, which is very newbie friendly...honestly some of the 'main' distros are getting so windows friendly, its scary!!

I have used many versions of Linux & have found Mandrake to be the easiest to install & configure. There are many books available to teach you how to use Linux. It is very different to Windows when you start to get more involved with it, but you will find it much more stable than Windows.

I've got a book called 'Running Linux' published by O'Reilly, which I have found useful... Having said that, I still consider myself very much a Linux newbie.

There's a book in the Mark Minasi series called Linux for Windows Administrators. You can find it here on Amazon. It's fairly old now and is focused on RedHat 7.3, but I found it really useful for learning Linux basics. The beauty of it is that it's written with Windows Admins in mind and shows you how to do common Windows tasks in Linux. It's worth a look as you can download RedHat 7.3 and install it on a pretty low spec machine. The book deals mainly with the command line, which is far more useful for servers than workstations.
