Can missing driver lead to install error?

Hi all, I've been installing server 2012 today on a Dell Poweredge 2950. Installing from disk, when the install started I got a message saying that there was a driver missing (unfortunately I didn't get a photo of the message but will tomorrow if I get it again), it didn't say what driver but merely hinted that it could have been a USB or Media driver. So I downloaded all the server drivers from the Dell website, stuck them onto a disk and allowed the wizard to search for the driver it wanted. It didn't find one, but allowed me to continue with the server 2012 install anyway. Then, part way through the install I gets the message pictured here, so I wondered if this was a result of having not found the missing driver at the beginning? Here's hoping for some insight :-)

Typically if a RAID driver's missing, this'll cause the install to fail. It could also be the wrong driver that's installed, causing it to fail later during the install.

Oooh. RAID drivers are probably the only ones I didn't download from Dell . I did however download a full ISO from the Dell website and ran a server update before attempting to install the OS, that update went well. I'll grab the RAID drivers tomorrow and give those a bash :-)

So I downloaded what I thought are the raid drivers from the Dell website (they were all exe files) put them onto a disk and tried that. When the install errors out and asks for drivers, I point it to the CD but then get this message. Maybe I've not got the right drivers?

You would have to extract the files first from the compiled .exe file(s)

Usually this is an option when you run the .exe (to either install, or to extract). Make note of folder location and copy on to a disc etc.

 

Not sure what model of 2950 you have, as they are old; but ours is x86 (so make sure you've correct drivers too).

dont install windows server direct from the dvd/usb on a poweredge server. go to the lifecycle controller and install it from there it downloads all the drivers for you makes it much easier jut feed it the windows dvd when it asks for its

I do recall this lifecycle controller being referenced when I have been reading up on the server, however I can't find anything of this nature on the server. I read that F10 at startup will launch the LCC but when I do, nothing happens.

I did think about launching the exe files on a windows pc I have, and then transferring the resulting extracted files onto disk to use in the server. But when I run the exe files on the PC, it says that the update package is incompatible with your system configuration, or the system is too new for the for the update package. Think I need a server to do this on, but I can't install the server.

My experience of trying to install Server 2012/R2 on a server that old has not been one of success. Max I ever managed was 2008 R2. I can't remember what was the main issue - I think the RAID controller on the old hardware I had was part of it. You may be flogging a dead horse though.

Anyone want to buy three PE2950's? LOL . Now comes the task of trying to convince SLT that we need new servers :-/

As that thread suggests, you may be able to in-place upgrade them if you install 2008 R2 first. Worth a shot I guess, it can be handy having some old servers around to fill in some services/redundancy roles.
