In house music/how to allow students to music/Ripping purchased music cd's.

Hi All,

 

Ive been asked at looking to provide music for our students whilst they are working.

 

I've read

but thats more about students/staff bringing in illegal downloads. Therees a couple of older posts without answers but dont want to dig up threads from 2010.

 

Has anyone done this?

 

Im trying to find out if the school buys a copy of the latest Now album, if we are then able to store on our file server for students across the school to play. This seems to go against the copyright rules though.

 

Sites like Youtube and Spotify are blocked for our students.

 

Radio sites wouldnt work as they would get fed up of adverts etc.

 

Reading through the PRs license you have to log every bit of music and when it was used. Not something that will probably happen.

 

Any ideas?

You can get a license from someone like PRS. This allows the broadcast of music - not direct access to the MP3s involved. We then buy our MP3s from a commercial operator and place them on our streaming server (internal only) which automatically logs each play of a song.

Sounds interesting. If you get a chance could you pm/share what you use to do this?

Spoke to CEFM who deal with licensing for school. Waiting to hear back about costs etc.

We play the music on a server which is running a streaming program (MB Recaster). This allows us to pick up the stream from elsewhere using VLC or even a nice little HTML player widget (the code for which can be found online and popped into an intranet page for example). We can control the server via a custom app, but you could easily just set it off playing with playlists, randomiser etc. Programs like Winamp (which could be used to play the music on the server, which MB Recaster captures) keep a count of the number of plays of any song for your records.

Radio Paradise. A good mix of music, no adverts, DJ selected, and the only interruptions are a few "You've just heard/Next Up/Bung us a $few please".

Just tried it.

First thing i heard was "lets go back to 1960"

 

Seems alright for the office but not for the students

looks like the goverment provides schools with prs license now.

 

All i need to do then is setup a streaming server and find a music provider.

This is the point that I have reached, have you had any success in finding a service that will allow the purchase of tracks as a school in its entirety?

It sort of got put in our slow time work and its not been mentioned again by anyone.
