Vicky Posted March 15, 2017 Posted March 15, 2017 (edited) Hi guys! We are looking to upgrade our current instance of DPM to the latest version of 2016. We will also be upgrading the OS. Just wondered if anyone out there has performed this upgrade yet, how did it go, what sort of issues did you come across. More importantly we are looking at the way that the new version of DPM handles storage. From what ive read you can create volumes now. MYK-IT Posted March 15, 2017 Posted March 15, 2017 (edited) Hi @Vicky DPM2012 R2 to 2016 is one of our projects for later this year; but I haven't had much time to research this further yet. Although, as you mentioned, I too would like to ensure we configure and install it in a way that maximises the storage / capacity by using one (or more) of the new storage / features you mentioned; including the possibility of running it (and the DPM Storage Pool Disks) as virtual machines / disks combined with deduplication enabled; even though it will be running off a dedicated physical server etc. As we are also using Azure Backup Vault I also need to take that into account as at present, all the HDD space is allocated for DPM Storage Pool (short-term backup) but the Azure agent also requires disk space when attempting to recover anything from an online backup. (In the interim, I've had to add an external HDD to allow for this). When we upgraded our DPM2012 R2 server last year (from 2008R2 to 2012R2 Server) we ended up flattening the entire server (sacrificing short-term backups) then re-cataloging the long-term backup tapes. There are ways of preserving the SQL database etc; and probably the existing data on the DPM Storage Pool Disks too, but for us that was the better of the solutions. markwilfan Posted March 15, 2017 Posted March 15, 2017 Yeh did this a few weeks ago. Found stability is much better. Os is still 2012 r2 but planning in upgrading this in summer. Not major issues, just ran the installer iirc
mullet_man Posted March 15, 2017 Posted March 15, 2017 Am about to do this myself upgrading DPM 2012 on a 2012r2 box to DPM 2016. I ran the prerequisites check today and all ready to go. Might wait till half term just in case as I imagine all the backup agents will need upgrading and then restarting.

I've just done the upgrade to DPM 2016 and found the agents didn't need a restart but our older 2008/r2 servers needed Windows Management Framework (WMF) 3.0 or 4.0 installing. Moving to 2016 later this year. Once I'd got that installed the upgrades went fine.

We'd initially planned on building a new server as we didn't want to risk upgrading a live backup server just incase of any issues given the risk of data loss whilst the upgrade is carried out? mullet_man Posted June 27, 2017 Posted June 27, 2017 No major issues, if you've got old servers like me you'll need to ensure Windows Management Framework is installed. I also had an issue with the old database was deactivated but DPM was trying to back it up. 1

ADMaster Posted June 27, 2017 Posted June 27, 2017 last I checked sql 2016 is not supported by DPM 2016 you can only go to 2014. This was back around November or December so be sure to check the latest requirements.
