Seeing as there is now a VAST amount of money being pumped into the technologies to make driverless cars a very real thing in the not too distant future (see this report: Intel buys driverless car technology firm Mobileye - BBC News) I wonder how this will affect how we use cars and the impact on transport based economies?

I really do think that in 20 years time this may become the norm rather than the exception and even trucks are predicted to have driverless abilities. To this end, I think that car ownership may be something that might dwindle.

Imagine paying to merely have access to a car as and when you want it rather than having to own one that is permantly 'yours', and what affect this may have on taxi companies.

Admittedly there are a lot of things to work out in the meantime, but I think this will change the way we get around dramatically in the next decade or so.

I really do think that in 20 years time this may become the norm rather than the exception and even trucks are predicted to have driverless abilities. To this end, I think that car ownership may be something that might dwindle.

Admittedly there are a lot of things to work out in the meantime, but I think this will change the way we get around dramatically in the next decade or so.

I think car ownership disappearing will be a long process and may be a "city tech" to start with. If I lived in London, with all the public transport options they have, and could get a car when ever I needed one without the hassle of needing to maintain it and store it I would jump on it like a jumpy thing. But out in the sticks the situation changes, I doubt there would be a car depot near us so we would need to book well in advance and trying to do that would be nigh on impossible with kids plus you lose that ability to be spontaneous. I could well see us dropping from 2 cars to one if I could get a booking for work but you also lose that ability to stay at work a bit later if you have a car waiting for you.

 

Trucks will be a massive change and one that could start the future uprisings popular culture talk about. You dump truck drivers and you suddenly have a massive unemployment bump. Why haven't we automated trains yet? One of the reasons is the amount of workforce that would be dumped.

 

I could talk about this for hours as it is the start of an interesting age but I bet it all gets hijacked and we end up Blade runner/Judge Dredd rather then Star Trek.

Mobileye made the Autopilot 1 software for Tesla Model S and I imagine mobileye saw selling the tech to multiple companies, not just high end electric cars. Autopilot 2 in later Teslas are playing catchup.

 

The physical technology for level 5 autonomous is already in 200K Teslas. The software isn't in place and the the legal barriers are still pretty high.

 

Like AirBnB you'll be able to rent your car out as a cab.

How will the cars drive? what is going to guide them and how are they going to park? GPS wont work in multistories/underground carparks, the tunnels etc etc

how will you get to an industrial estate or along a private road.

GPS is used as an indication as to the car's location. The task of driving - lane control, obstacles, collision-avoidance is done with very sophisticated image processing. They still have those odd-spinning cameras on top of the cars.

Driverless trucks in the UK are also going to be waaaay in the future (if at all) as we have too many small roads to navigate with hazards that computers simply won't be able to factor in such as weak verges and other hard to see hazards.

What happens when one crashes into you how would that go with insurance etc.

 

I quite like the idea for long distances. Could book one at night and sleep whilst it drives for you.

Self-driving cars should be liable for accidents, not the passengers—UK gov’t

 

The first item on the bill involves automated vehicles, and how to ensure that the vehicle's owner (which may or may not be a driver) and potential accident victims are protected. The bill says that insurance companies must offer two types of protection: for when a vehicle is acting autonomously, but also if the human driver decides to takes control. Essentially, the government wants to make sure that an accident victim can always claim compensation from the insurance company, even if the car was acting autonomously.

 

It would then be up for the insurance company to try and reclaim that money from the car maker through existing common law and product liability arrangements. An impact assessment from last year details how the government thinks this process might occur in practice:

 

Where the manufacturer is found to be liable, the insurer will be able to pursue a subrogated claim against the manufacturer under existing common law and product liability arrangements and recover their costs from the manufacturer. It is possible that the first few cases will go to court though over time we expect insurers and manufacturers will develop processes to handle subrogated claims quickly and easily. And, in any case, we do not consider it to be in a manufacturer’s commercial interest to be unhelpful to insurers in determining liability or paying subrogated claims; ultimately insurers could potentially cease offering insurance products for their vehicles if their route to recovery was consistently blocked.

In a somewhat rare display of tech savviness, there are two exemptions listed in the bill. If the vehicle owner makes unauthorised changes to the car's software, or fails to install a software update as mandated by their insurance policy, then the insurer doesn't have to pay.
