Old bits and bobs

I've got a few boxes of things like Belkin AP's and USB print servers plus various HP jet direct bits, parallel and USB. I've got expansion cards to fit in some HP printers i.e. LAN and Wireless, plus loads of random cables. I've had a bit of a sort out but can't see any reason to keep the things like AP's and print servers.

 

Worth keeping hold of this old stuff or just get rid? By the way this is just at home!!

 

How long can old tech be kept before its not worth keeping anymore? I keep hold of the odd rare cable and connector type thing as they do come in useful but stuff I've not touched in over 5 years, just bin it?

I have a stash of old GPU's, a PSU or two, routers, processors, fans, cables, you name it, I got it. Really all needs taking to the tip, but I don't drive, so that's a bit difficult D=

 

As for your kit, take a few photos for http://www.edugeek.net/forums/general-chat/179767-any-tech-spotters.html and then bin the lot I reckon.

That surely rather depends on your attitude to stuff and how much space you have. My ex used to throw my stuff away while I was still typing away on the keyboard - which was probably a bit too ruthless. Having now moved to a smaller house, I'm now much more ruthless than I used to be, although I will let myself finish typing this befo[NO CARRIER]

According to the movies of the 90's, you could make a decent humanoid robot out of all that tat and even send it to your work instead of yourself. Give it a go!

I've kept the useful bits i.e. PSU's and other bits like that have dwindled as I don't tend to get my hands on much like this now but these bits I've tried selling and I've looked on eBay, for what I would make, by the time I've packaged and posted it what profit I'd make its minimal and really not worth the hassle selling I don't think. It's old tech and I think I'm just keeping it for the sake of it but its been sat there long enough now so no use. Think I will just dispose of it out the way.

 

Might try my luck once more, will grab a list together when I get 5 minutes.

Exactly, my thoughts, not used it in probably 8 years. It's in the pile to dispose of just got to bring it out the attic when I get another pair of hands, its a long way down haha

My garage is full of boxes of computer garbage - I was rootling through just the other day to find a spare monitor cable - and saw SCSI cables, parallel printer sharers and other odds and siods that'll never be used again - I must get round to getting rid!

I have a "small" stash in the study at home. It's probably not as small as Mr gee40 thinks it is. And then there's the crate labelled "wires" in the spare room.

I thought I'd try and Ebay some old SATA HDDs and a bunch of PCI cards (wireless, network, SATA etc), might get a few quid or something, but nope, no interest. I took the SATA drives to the local CEX and got around £3-5 per drive which is better than being sat around gathering dust. I used the trade in credit to buy used SSD, which they offer a 2 year warranty on so not all bad.. YMMV

I had an old wireless router and upgraded the firmware, created an encrypted VPN proxy tunnelling and configured it as a router (rather than a gateway) to extend my wireless in the house which would have been impossible with the standard firmware.

Are you talking about a router or an AP?

I've only got AP's so dont think it would be any use.
