I'm a big fan of podcasts, so while I was tidying up my podcast list I thought I'd share a few of my favourites with you.

 

 

Next Music. I *love* this podcast. Every week a DJ curates a selection of music. This is my music playlist. I've found some great new bands and music from this podcast.

Cracked It's hard to pin this one down, it's covers subjects too diverse to categorise.

Cracked is really well worth exploring. I must admit that some week's subjects don't interest me very much, but that's more a failing on my part.

This particular Cracked podcast is one of the most intriguing. It's called 'Why Your Brain is Sabotaging You' and it delves into psychology, covering fitness, weight loss, self help, planning and the dichotomy of your present self vs your future self. This is very interesting stuff.

If you only ever listen to one Cracked, make it this one.

99% Invisible This is a podcast primarily about design, and invisible design. Well worth investigating. The recent one about the Chinese market city (where we get all our Poundshop stuff/junk from) is fascinating. It's called 'Dollar Store Town'.

Reply All is a real mix of esoteric topics. The episode titles are intriguing, too. The 'Dead Is Paul' title makes perfect sense to me now, and made me laugh when I found out what it meant.

Slate's The Gist. A distinct American slant, but not limited to all things American. I like this one.

Dr Karl on JJJ An Australian radio phone-in show with questions answered by the outstanding Dr Karl. If you like science, you'll absolutely love this. I highly recommend this podcast. Money back if not delighted. If you don't like this, I'll buy a hat and eat it live on Youtube.

NPR's Planet Money An interesting financial podcast.

Song Exploder "A podcast where musicians take apart their songs, and piece by piece, tell the story of how they were made." Really interesting stuff.

Freakonomics Another one that's difficult to pin down, but definitely worth exploring.

The Message and Life After. This is a really nice diversion, a pair of good sci-fi stories. I enjoyed The Message, about the decoding of an alien signal and the subsequent disaster that befalls those who hear it. I haven't listened to Life After, but I'll probably binge when a few episodes build up. Started listening to Life After on the bike ride this morning, and it sounds good.

Dan Carlin's Hardcore History--massively entertaining amatuer historian, often four hours long when he gets too carried away, only come out every three months or so because they're so exhaustively researched.

 

The Long Now Foundation--kind of like TED talks for futurism. Often some very cool info and thinking in there.

 

PodCastle--fantasy fiction. I concede I may be biased on this one, seeing as I'm an associate editor and they keep buying my stories (I have two forthcoming, sometime, eventually)

Podcasts | Stuff You Should Know - Lots of topics and concepts broken down and discussed.

 

Stuff Mom Never Told You - Feminist discussions, discussions on gender/social trends or history and bringing light to movements/women often overlooked in history again. Sometimes they do some good silly topics too. (There was an episode on Emoji a while ago.)

 

(Often NSFW) - Comedian friends discussing and explaining (and ragging on) morbid topics like cults, serial killers, occult & paranormal activity and conspiracy theories.

 

Private Eye | Official Site - the UK's number one best-selling news and current affairs magazine, edited by Ian Hislop - Ian Hislop's Private Eye podcast.

 

Honorary mentions go to Lore, Hardcore History & Tech Stuff.

I'm not a podcast listener but both my wife and daughter really enjoy Night Vale.

 

From what they tell me it's a bizarre tale of a fictional desert town, seems to have quite a following, they do live shows and have books as well.

I mainly use the podcast app on iphone, which I went in one day and discovered a whole world that I thought was a thing of the past but in reality is new and exciting.

 

I mostly listen to truecrime podcasts.

 

Up & Vanished - Tara Grinstead murder/disappearence in Ocilla Georgia - very popular since people talked and 2 guys were arrested and indicted. Due to a gag order on the case there's still a lot of mystery around how the murder was committed.

 

Sworn - A spin off from U&V featuring lawyer Philip Holloway investigating cases from a law enforcement/court perspective

 

Criminal - Stories of crimes strange and unusual. Start with episode 51 - about a family who collectively have their identities stolen.

 

Freakonomics Radio - Stories like in the book with Stephen J Dubner

 

Serial - The original wrongful conviction podcast.

 

Answer me this - Random facts

 

Undisclosed - The 2nd original wrongful conviction podcast - Currently detailing a death in police custody case in Baltimore.

 

Truth & Justice - Investigates wrongful conviction cases with a crowdsourced "army". Mostly it's people discussing theories in the FB Group. Currently investigating the murder of Keow Gove, a school cook in Pleasant Grove, Dallas. The investigation has already shown that Jessie Eldridge, convicted of the crime is clearly innocent. There's pretty good information that points in the direction of the true perpetrators.

 

Actual Innocence - interviews people who were wrongfully convicted and later released

 

Found - about random notes people find

 

Reply all - Internet related stories and investigations. If you're interested in internet news/technology you'll def like it.

 

Casefile True Crime - a mysterious australian presenter narrates the full story on crimes from around the world. Start with Case 49 3 episodes of the story of the moors murderers.

 

Unconcluded - Investigating the unsolved disappearance of Jennifer Kesse in Orlando Florida. Vanished from her home / the vicinity of and never seen again. Her car was later found a mile away at another apartment building and cctv shows an unknown person driving it there and leaving it.

 

Convicted - Investigating the conviction of Richard Nicolas who supposed killed his own daughter. Even though he was convicted it doesn't seem likely.

 

No Such thing as a fish - The elves from QI talk about random things. Fact show.

 

FBI Retired case file - Interviews of retired FBI agents about particular cases in their career

 

Untold- The Daniel Morgan Murder - The murder of a PI in south London involving phone hacking and police corruption.

 

This American Life - Serial was a spinoff of this. Stories about things, American

 

Crimetown - Stories about the mob in Rhode Island. Particularly involving Buddy Cianci who was the Mayor of Providence, RI . Stories from wiseguys involved in the mob.

 

The British History Podcast - Very detailed history of Britain. After 245 episodes they're up to King Alfred fighting the Danes.

 

Malcolm Gladwell: Revisionist History - Historical events revised by the author.

 

Best Case worst case - persons involved in law and order detailing their best and worst cases. Presented by retired fbi profiler Jim Clemente who also has his own podcast "Real Crime Profile".

 

Gone at 21 - the interviews of a private eye investigating the unsolved murder of Katelyn Markham, Fairfield, Ohio.

 

Ear Hustle - New podcast about life in american prisons, presented by actual prisoners.

 

Although this seems a lot haha I will skip episodes of things that dont sound particularly interesting and of the podcasts I'm less bothered about or just don't have time for.
