Not really sure on this one, my switches look like they are always busy, (even at low usage periods) but I`m not experiencing any network performance issues, browsing to network shares are almost instant, log on speeds are ok. Pings to Servers are <1ms

How else can i test?

Switches are HP v1910 and 3com 2900`s. STP is on on the switches.

Surely there would be network performance issues if there was a loop?!.

What do you mean by busy? As long as clients are connected and on or have WOL set up, the switches will always show activity via the lights on the ports.

If you think there's an issue try some network monitoring software or see if the switch has any monitoring in the control panel, but if you aren't having issues, I wouldn't worry.

Yeah sorry, "busy" isnt a great way to describe it! lol.

It just seemed there was more activity on the switches than there should have been, but now you mention WOL then that would probably be the reason\explain it.

Probably being too picky and as you say if there isnt any issues then I think its ok

Thanks

You would know if you had a loop, your hair would be falling out!

Machines are constantly "chattering" and sending our broadcasts to other devices. I wouldn't worry about it.

I you've been unfortunate and experienced a network loop will know what they look like :getmecoat: Specially when you listen to someone who swears that they have enabled STP on the switch but then admits that they didn't.

The lights go absolutely crazy but in addition people may have login issues, browsing internet will be very intermittent if it works at all, etc, etc.

Thanks all,

Yeah ive been party to one before, just couldnt workout if the switches looked like they had so.e kind of loop or that was just normal behaviour.

Sometimes good to get other peoples opinions and put it to bed

Cheers

Depending on the switches, sometimes the flashing activity lights will lock on solid. Pull the loop and they start flashing. That's with HPs anyway. I would always know when there was a loop - my RDS sessions would drop out, couldn't ping anything, then all hell would break loose.
