Marshall_IT Posted November 7, 2016 Posted November 7, 2016 Hi All, I appear to have miss any early notifications about this changing although I knew it was probably coming for a while now, but it looks like the 'school code' way of force youtube for education has now stopped working. The new method here suggests either setting DNS entries or inserting http headers into the request. I'm just wondering if anyone has got this working. Obviously i'd like Staff to have full access and students to have restricted access which was possible on the old system, but i can't see a way of doing it using the DNS settings (unless i maybe put them into the students HOSTS file?) and i'm currently looking into if my web filter iboss can do it at a per group level. Any help or ideas welcome! Thanks, Chris.

YT for Schools hasn't been accepting new signups for years and Google officially announced that it was dead a year ago. I've not seen anything to say that they are pulling the plug for schools that already had a code, but it doesn't surprise me. The new stuff is heavily integrated into Google Apps - it adds quite a few new capabilities but also requires you to buy into the whole Google Apps thing if you don't already. fiza Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 Originally Youtube had restricted mode but now they have split it so you have 'severe restricted' and 'moderate restricted' we are finding that moderate is more school friendly whereas severe just blocked everything.

Any help or ideas welcome! Thanks, Chris. We've got an advantage here because we're a GAfE School (whoops sorry, G Suite...). We've had this up and running from day one with DNS entries. I live in hope that lightspeed will update the Youtube for School code area to a selection box for default filtering levels. We've given staff unrestricted, 6th form moderate and lower years restricted - but obviously they need to log into youtube for this to happen. Could you proxy youtube traffic through your iboss? That way the iboss would be doing the DNS lookup and you could point it at a DNS server (or is there an internal one) which has the edited entries? Otherwise host files is a possibility, or of cause you could just ditch O365... :-)

It was most definitely dropped for schools with a code in early July this year. Funnily enough I had been speaking with a Google Education Rep about this just a couple of days previous to it being dropped and contacted her shortly afterwards and she confirmed. Duke5A Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 I just recently setup strict mode on a test proxy using the DNS method. Injecting headers was out because I don't have a proxy setup that can peek into an HTTPS stream. I didn't want it setup for teachers either, so my solution to that was have the students on their own proxy and have said proxy point to itself for DNS where I setup the request rewriting. Running Debian 8 with Squid setup for logging against AD (via Kerberos) and DNS being served by Bind. Haven't put it into wide scale production yet.

win Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 If you use Chrome there is a group policy that allows you to set restricted mode (and the level) so you can have one setting for students and one for staff. Won't work on IE but you can block it there via other policies if needed.

Students are denied access to the "Streaming & Downloadable Video" and "Streaming & Downloadable Video" Web Categories in CensorNet. Staff have Full Access. We have Planet eStream and push the teachers heavily to use that instead. Any resources that we are legally alowed to put on eStream are being added for Students to use.

Staff embeds youtube video into our VLE student is able to view video, on our VLE only, and only that video. Seemed to be the only compromise....
