Hi - we've been asked if we can do the following on the iPads but our current mdm doesn't seem to do it so I was wondering if any of you would let me know of one (ideally free) you use that can

 

Order Apps on the home screens

Put Apps into folders

Prevent students adding anything (including shortcuts) to the home screens

Prevent students accessing Settings

Access video and photo storage so we can copy photos/videos elsewhere (one drive or network or similar)

I've managed to do all of the above with Cisco Meraki MDM. It's free for up to 100 devices and I picked it up in no time, so give it a go. After 100 devices you need to purchase a license for every device though (including the 100 previously free ones!) but well worth it in my opinion.

I second this. Meraki is brilliant and my go-to MDM solution.

No MDM can prevent students accessing the Settings....but you can lock down what can be done, such as changing the iPad name, access to passcode etc

MDM's are not file sharing solutions so can not provide a solution, you will need to look at either Google Drive, One Drive etc....

Depends on what you want to do.

 

Meraki Backpack allows you to point to the device to a file share (Google Drive or Dropbox etc) and clients pull down the files. Don't think that you can save back to it from the device though.

They have the kids (years 3-6) take photos, create movies adn use other apps to do similar things but then ideally they want to be able to 1) bac up the work incase the ipad fails, 2) perhaps use the photos/videos in other work done on the PC suites and 3) give the teachers access to the stuff from their own computers. I didn;t think it was possible but I was tasked with finding out and I thought if it can be done someone here has probably done it

As I said, most MDM's let you push content, books PDF etc to devices, you can even do this with AC2 but it's not a file sharing solution.

Can't see that you did say that. Meraki is a file sharing solution in the sense that the admin can share files with all the devices in the mdm in a one way style. Its just not what the OP wanted

You can use the restrictions profile to prevent access to specific apps. Or only allow specific apps. This will hide the settings app.

 

Edit: Ignore what I've just said. As mentioned below the restrictions profile doesn't allow you to remove the settings app.

You can't hide the Settings app, you can hide everything else apart from that.

There are a lot of different options for sharing files on iPads, none of which are ideal. In the past I've seen it done with File Browser apps that can browse Windows shares, or using WebDAV to create a http share on your Windows server, although both of those solutions are a bit too fiddly for end users IMO.

 

We're using Feem here, which pushes files between an app on the device and a receiver program on the Windows PC. Only valid for stuff on the Camera Roll, but it's doing the job for us, and with a simple set of notes I drew up, staff are coping. If you look at this one, my advice would be to use v3, I don't like their v4 very much.

 

Edit - Also, +1 for Meraki. You can set the home screen out very easily, and makes the layout tamperproof. Bit of a steep learning curve though!
