It does have a diesel noise, but its smooth, my old Golf felt like it would rattle your teeth out. Audi sits at lights without any movement or rattles.

E46 petrol makes more sense than any of the diesels to be honest. Unless your doing a huge amount of motorway miles, petrol wins time and time again for a number of reasons. Diesels have come a long way from the days of being the domain of tractors and locomotives, but they still aren't in the same league when it comes to smoothness or refinement of petrols.

I can agree with that.. .also got A Merc C Class on my mind... 2.4 petrol manual or the 2.1 td simply because the 2.1 is cheaper tax.

I'd go for the 2.4 petrol all day long. Turns a family saloon into something a bit more exciting. But then again I've always liked a big petrol engine

 

If you've never owned BMW or Merc before, just be prepared for some bigger bills. And if you are coming from a Honda/Toyota/Lexus background, be prepared for a slight drop in reliability. The Japs have and still trump in this area.

What's your budget and do you need an estate?

 

You can get a MK6 Golf TDI for around £4k now or a Skoda Superb

 

Weren't the mk6 TDIs the ones most affected by the recent fuel economy/diesel injector scandal? If so, I'm not surprised they've come down so much!

Thing is im not doing moon miles. Im doing on average 30 miles a week. I do love a big petrol engine... Ive owned 3.0 V6 Jags etc. BUT - The Merc C220 2.1 is £50 a month on insurance. Thats gonna be pretty hard to beat. I get bills might be high on Audi, Merc, BMW, but I can and do undertake most work myself so that lowers labour bills. Parts are a little more expensive but not by much to best honest and if u get the right parts you only have the layout once maybe twice anyway (Clutch kits etc).

 

I have seen several A6 2.4's. Will keep my eyes open - will also keep na eye out for a similar spec BMW with the right engine.

 

Though I am feeling it's Merc time lol. Though Tax is higher on the C220 2.6 (Petrol).

Would you all agree ?

Hey, Yes I do often move a lot of things that don't often fit in Hatchbacks... And win 2 kids things can be a squeeze with prams bags etc. LOL

May be worth looking at an early to mid 2000s Saab 9-5 estate? A hell of a lot of car for the money. They do a 2.0 and 2.3 4cyl manual. Believe the trim levels are Vector for a the sporty model and Arc for a softer, granddaddy luxury version. There is also a performance model called the Aero of which has a 240hp 2.3 turbo unit.

 

Definitely worth a look if you want something a little different.

That's a good shout - a post 2003 2l or 2.3 litre one to avoid the sludge issues. The diesel is a Fiat unit in later cars - some horror stories but plenty with mega miles too. Cheap, well built and good looking car.
