SpuffMonkey Posted October 14, 2016 Posted October 14, 2016 Remember all of those - even carried a pager when my wife was expecting. A friend of mine worked on the development of Laserdisks - I thought they were great when I visited her and saw the quality - shame they didn't catch on - I think I'm right in saying that a Laserdisk rip was about the only way you could get a full and uncensored set of Tom & Jerry cartoons for a long time - you never see them on TV nowadays...

robintech Posted December 12, 2024 Posted December 12, 2024 Bit confusing the first one is a picture of an obscure analogue Video Floppy instead of a 3.5" floppy

I was told that during manufacture they had a lot of problems with sticking 2 a sides or 2 b sides together.
DavR Posted December 12, 2024 Posted December 12, 2024 Note sure where they're getting their VHS run times from 2 or 4hrs, and then 5hrs? Your average tape was 3hrs, which could hold 6hrs on long play mode. I think 4hr tapes existed? Which took the theoretical maximum to 8hrs, but quality would be pretty naff by then, and you'd be risking mangling the tape. I do miss the solid response of a rotary phone, though. We had one still in our house still well into the late 90s.
David44 Posted December 12, 2024 Posted December 12, 2024 I had a few BBC branded 5 hour tapes, they gave something like 15 hours recording time on my Panasonic VCR in ELP mode which I thought was amazing at the time. The quality must have been terrible but I don't remember it being so. I've probably watched things in worse quality on YouTube in 2024.

We had one still in our house still well into the late 90s. Under PAL, we had the common lengths E-120 (2hr), E-180 (3hr) & E-240 (4hr). Americans under NTSC only had T-120 (2hr) & T-160 (2hr, 30min). Other lengths may have existed but weren't standard. Each length could be doubled using Long Play or tripled using Extended Play (also known as Super Long Play) if the Video Recorder supported it. Having recorded stuff using EP/SLP, the quality was certainly lacking. Edited December 12, 2024 by MrEprise
