Bev Posted August 20, 2016 Posted August 20, 2016 I need to install 32 NUC computers in our ICT suite next week (I can't get into do it until after the bank holiday). We have these desks so I can't mount them on the back of the monitors, and because of the way the desks close, having the computer on the desktop isn't an option either. My original plan was to mount the VESA plate under the desk and then attach the computers to this, but I tried one and it was not easy to attach to the desktop (although not impossible if I purchased a better drill), but then I'm worried as the PCs seem to attach by sliding down into a narrower slot and obviously we won't have gravity on our side, so will they fall off? My next thought is maybe mounting the plates back to back around a leg? Has anyone tried this? is it madness? My thought was to get longish bolts, and mount 2 plates back to back with 4 bolts, possibly adding some double sided velco in the mix to keep it secure? Then I can mount the NUCs vertically, into the mounts? Any other ideas? I am starting to panic about how I will do this.
davethetekkie Posted August 20, 2016 Posted August 20, 2016 Could you maybe mount at the top of the back kick plate on your desks where you could possibly mount the NUCs upright (I.E. In the orientation they're designed to be mounted)? They'd be a pain to get to but if you can set a wake and shutdown timer on the machines it could be a way around it? The only other alternative would be to see if anyone has created a secure cage-style mount for the NUCs; I know Colin at VeryPC was able to fix us up with some for their fanless miniature machines but I'm not sure if he's had similar requests for any NUCs that he's supplied...

Would a spot of Sugru on each NUC to hold it on to the backplate do?

Ooh, I'm not back in school until next week but I will investigate that. That would be much easier. The desks are smart top, about 8 years old, and I think made by a previous manufacturer so possibly slightly different. RE drill. I think I will buy one. I don't often need one but it will come in handy. Sugru-looks interesting, I have never heard of it but I will look into it.
Bev Posted August 30, 2016 Author Posted August 30, 2016 Well, it was going OK. Mounted first nuc under desk, sideways so it's unlikely to get knocked down. Feeling quite positive and then went to plug it in. We have under floor power boxes, and the plugs are about 2 inches tall..... 1
Alis_Klar Posted March 19, 2018 Posted March 19, 2018 Sorry to Zombie this thread but I have also done exactly this and found that the NUCs will slide (fall) out too easily. You could cable tie the NUC to the VESA mount plate to avoid this. Also everybody has to be told how to power these on as you can't easily see the power button on the NUCs with the power button on the top. The newset gen have the power button at the front so this is less of an issue now. Old type (we have) New type front mounted power button
Bev Posted March 19, 2018 Author Posted March 19, 2018 Sadly, your message comes too late. We have already discovered this same issue and have also resorted to cable ties. I've also found the cable management behind the small devices is a problem, the larger boxes hid a multitude of sins. All in all, not one of my best ideas. Bev
Alis_Klar Posted May 4, 2018 Posted May 4, 2018 I still think its a good idea. I used sticky pads with hooks and lots of cable ties to route the cables from the back of the NUC.

Not only did they keep falling out (even after cable tying) but with small desks the chairs and children's feet were constantly knocking into them, breaking the headphone connector (since the port is only on the front) and generally causing chaos. We have mounted on the wall next to the monitors now, looks a lot messier but so much more reliable.

I wish I could do that, we have desks where the monitor is mounted on the lid of the desk and they fold away, so there is no room for the NUC next to the monitor. It has been a big mistake for us, one I regret on a daily basis. Most headphone connectors have broken, cables are impossible to tidy and if you do excessively cable tie then it's a nightmare to replace a cable if one fails, and they get knocked on the floor on a regular basis (even though they are cable tie'd to the mounts). Not something I will do again!
